The film “Identity Monologues” is a thought-provoking reflection on the current state of our relationships with ourselves and the people around us. In the age of the self, we have lost the sensibility of connecting with one another.
The aftermath of the current times has distracted us and severely lessened our attention span, resulting in the loss of meaningful connection within ourselves and the world around us.
We often feel alienated and struggle to display our true feelings while surrounded by crowds.

The film’s visual story follows two characters in an urban setting who are struggling to reconnect despite knowing one another. They attempt to do so by shedding their societal uniforms, revealing their true selves, and allowing each other to finally experience a meaningful connection.
The changing state of the relationship is represented by the composition, styling, and camera, documenting the two individuals becoming closer throughout the film.
The characters’ monologues in the film are subtitled; the presence of sound is from the powerful and emotional score, which reflects their shifting internal feelings.

The central message of “Identity Monologues” is that we all crave human connection. The movie itself is a poignant reminder of the importance of deeper human interaction and connection with the self, which we should strive to maintain throughout our existence.

Seoul - Warsaw connection. Blazej part of the zoom series taken last summer. B-cuts

2021년 6월 초 우리는 발전된 현대기술의 도움으로 서로 다른 대륙에서 처음 만나게 되었다. 판데믹과 다른 어려운 상황으로 서로 직접 만나서 촬영을 할 수 없었음에도 불구하고, 우리는 온라인으로 촬영을 진행했고 필름 카메라로도 담아낼 수 있었다.
겸손한 폴란스 십대소년 Blazej는 14살이라는 어린 나이에 비극적인 기차 사고를 겪게 되었고, 그로 인해 두 다리를 잃고 혼수상태에 빠져있었다. 짧은 시간 동안 자신의 삶을 불가피하게 바꿔놓은 일들을 경험했던 그는 현재 자신의 재단을 설립하여 자신과 비슷한 처지의 도움이 필요한 어린 친구들을 도우며 더 건강하고 적극적인 삶을 살아갈 수 있도록 지원하고 있다.

그는 스포츠와 “평범한 삶"을 위해 싸우는 것에 열정적이다. 현재 권투선수가 되기 위해 훈련을 하고 있으며 바르샤바에 있는 모델에이전시 ‘피노키오’와 계약을 하며 사회가 장애인들을 바라보는 시각을 (아마도, 그가 그럼에도 불구하고 무엇을 성취해 나갈 수 있느냐 보다, 그가 무엇을 가지고 있지 않은지에 대해 바라보는) 바꾸어 나가고 있다.

우리는 과거를 바꿀 수는 없지만, 오늘 그리고 내일이 어떤 모습일지는 선택할 수 있다.

Blazej 와 판데믹을 통해 배우는 ‘삶을 있는 그대로 받아들이는 방법’

It was early June when we "met" while on two different continents connected by modern technology. Despite the pandemic and other circumstances, not able to photograph in person, we managed to proceed with the shoot and capture it on film. Blazej is a humble teenager from Poland who, in such a short time, experienced things that changed his life inevitably. After the tragedy he experienced as a 14-year-old, he was found in a critical condition, kept alive in a coma when he lost both legs under the train wheels. Now he has his own foundation, which aims to help those under their care and support the proper development of disabled children and youth by promoting an active, healthy lifestyle.

He's passionate about sports and fights for a "normal" life. Training now to become a boxer and signing with Pinokio Models, a Warsaw-based modelling agency, he's changing how society looks at disabled people, perhaps in an environment that still sees him for what he doesn't have rather what (despite all) can achieve.

We can't do much about the past, but we can choose what today and tomorrow will look like. taken in Seoul, Korea by @mtjozefiak

For the final feature from our Anton Corbijn-inspired Open Call, we're sharing @mtjozefiak's portrait of Jiha Park:

"My process starts the same way regardless of the subject: I try to connect with the world someone inhabits before I ever raise the camera.

Here, that meant listening to Jiha's music until its own logic – repetition, disorientation, quiet – became the logic of the image. Inverting the portrait and letting the face dissolve into a blurred reflection wasn't a technique applied to her; it was my attempt to translate what her sound does to time and space into something you can look at. Shot on film at my studio in Seoul for Jiha Park's album promo."

Softness is never a synonym for fragility. 🪺
It is the fine creases in fabric, the warmth left by light passing through gauze, the breath felt as fingers brush over linen.
In these images, we try to capture the moments often overlooked—the folds left by women’s repeated folding, the luster cultivated through years of touch, the supple texture that remains resilient after every stretch and release.
Every kind of softness is a stance against time. Not strength against strength, but bearing weight through gentleness; not a brief bloom, but a sustained, patient, tender act of stitching a broken world back together.
Soft Survival is a way of being，unassuming yet enduring, gentle yet unbreakable.

여섯 해를 다섯 장의 사진으로 담는다는 것.

Esquire Korea에서 매거진 지면에 실릴 다섯 장의 사진을 골라달라는 요청을 받았을 때, 솔직히 거의 불가능한 일처럼 느껴졌습니다.
이제 저에게 한국은 단순히 바라보고 사진을 찍는 대상이 아니라, 어느새 제 일상이 된 곳이었으니까요.

인터뷰 중:
“제가 이 작업에 붙인 제목은 Ordinary Distances입니다. 제가 경험한 한국은 특별하거나 극적인 순간을 통해서가 아니라, 그 사이에 존재하는 공간들을 통해 기억되기 때문입니다. 일상의 반복, 대화, 이동, 그리고 매일 마주친 작은 순간들이 어느 순간부터 장소만큼이나 큰 의미를 갖게 되었습니다.”

그래서 하나의 모습을 정의하기보다는, 몇 개의 장면과 기억을 담은 다섯 개의 조각을 골랐습니다.

Contax G2로 필름 촬영한 사진들로, 서울의 문래동과 압구정, 부산, 그리고 선녀바위 해변에서 촬영했습니다.

Five photographs to somehow represent six years.

When @esquire.korea asked me to choose five images for a magazine spread, I found the idea almost impossible.
By then, it wasn’t a place I was simply photographing anymore — it had become part of my everyday life.
From the interview:
“I called the series Ordinary Distances. It reflects how I experienced Korea — not through extraordinary moments, but through the spaces in between. The routines, conversations, journeys and everyday encounters that slowly became part of my life eventually felt just as meaningful as the places themselves.”

So I chose fragments instead.
Shot on film with my Contax G2 across Seoul — from Mullae-dong to Apgujeong — as well as Busan and Sunnyeobawi Beach.
Grateful to Sungyoon Oh and the Esquire Korea team for the invitation and for giving me the space to share my perspective.

Jozefiak’s ‘Fearless Flowers: Beneath the Uniform’ is a stylised documentary exploring the tension between rapid modernisation and the expectations placed on bodies, gender, and identity. “South Korea is often viewed through the lens of acceleration—technology, pop culture, aesthetics, and global visibility,” Jozefiak explains. Beneath the polished image, however, conservative beliefs and rigid, often outdated standards persist. Following his move to South Korea, the filmmaker became interested in these contradictory social realities and how people resist societal norms. 🌹⁠

The film began as a photo series featuring individuals keen to share about their bodies, sexuality, and the image imposed on them by society. Jozefiak removed participants from the humdrum of everyday life and placed them in a neutral studio, slowing down the conventional gaze, softening it, and returning it to the subjects. ⁠

The project then progressed into a moving image series, which Jozefiak shot on Super 8. It was a “ritual” of preparation, conversation, and pause, he said.⁠
