Had some long drives in August, so I listened to more audiobooks than usual. The end of Yesteryear pissed me off, but the further I am away from it, the more I like it. Five was a great listen on my drive to Provo, UT for the funeral of a dear friend’s mom. On the paper book side, the books are positioned in order of favorite to least favorite, but there weren’t any bad books this month. I think I would have liked The Women more if 1. It hadn’t been hyped up so much and 2. I didn’t know that Kristin Hannah just wanted to make me cry. I did love the slice in time glimpse into a part of the history of the Vietnam War I hadn’t heard much about. by @mtn_reading

July had some really fun reads and some that weren’t for me. I have tried to like Dennis Johnson, but so far he’s fallen flat. I half loved half hated Canon, Sirens was fun, but I knew the twist well before the end. Persepolis was a reread for book club. I loved it, but I was in the minority at book club. East of Eden was for a different book club and I really enjoyed my time with that one. Peck and Peck comes out in October and it was a fun read. Angel Down was brutal and so weird. Song of Stork and Dromedary is a book I feel like I need to read again because I surely missed things, but at 736 pages I’m not rereading it right now. All in all a decent month. by @mtn_reading

May was an incredible reading month. No notes. Would recommend all of these. The first 3 all come out 9/29, so clear your TBR for October and move these to the top of your list! @deeshaphilyaw @lee_minjin and Hernan Diaz are three of my all time favorites and these books will not disappoint. @jesmynward has a collection of new and old essays and she is another author who I love anything she writes. Frankenstein was a re-read after reading Traversal by @mariapopova in April. @jacqueline_woodson book was a trip into her backlist. Tilt by @emmapattee will never let me look at brick buildings the same way again. All these were 4 or 5 star reads for me. Delightful! by @mtn_reading

Cannot wait to share this book with everyone on Sept 29th! I was absolutely obsessed with Philyaw’s short story collection and her novel is even better! I loved getting lost in the world of the Southern Black Church, something so far away from my rural Montana life. The issues around honesty and being true to yourself and your loved ones crosses all divides and differences among us. Such a fun and funny read, with strong characters and a great ending. by @mtn_reading

I’ll read anything Jesmyn Ward writes. Even when the content breaks your heart, the beauty in her writing puts it back together. This essay collection features previously published essays as well as new works. Ward writes about growing up as a Black woman in the south, detailing her experiences of poverty and racism, but also the deep love and joy of living near her extended family. She also talks about the authors that inspired her writing and it’s always fun to delve into the writers that shaped an author you love. Keep your eyes open for this one. Comes out 5/19. by @mtn_reading

This incredible memoir just won the Pulitzer and I am BEGGING y’all to read it. Yes it’s written in response to her younger son’s suicide, six years after her older son died the same way, but this book is beautiful. The way she processes the loss of both her son’s in such a devastating way is incredible and I just need everyone to read it. by @mtn_reading
