If your roots are so overgrown to the point you can't see the roots, you got hair growing outside the locs, or the loc has more than 3+ inches of space between the scalp and loc shaft it may be time for a crochet retwist.

Maintaining the health of your locs starts with cultivating your foundation. One method of cultivation is crochet
Crochet maintenance is necessarv for large amounts of new growth. A retwist only holds your new growth in place. It doesn't train your new growth to loc. As your locs get longer, they become heavier, which weakens the new growth/ untrained loose hairs. In the long term, causes thinning and or breakage.
