THE OCEAN IS A PORTAL; THE INTERTIDAL ZONE IS A GALAXY

Such a vibrant, purple ochre sea star!

Zoom in to see the sea urchin’s mouth (aka Aristotle’s Lantern) and tube feet!

Anemones were the most alien to me and the most mesmerizing. They shape-shifted with the tide, unfurling and expanding underwater, then contracting into viscous/gelatinous blobs when exposed to air

Harris Beach @ 6:15 am

Tidepooling before sunrise made everything more iridescent, more cosmic, more otherworldly

My fave person to wake up at 3:30 am and wander into darkness with ♥️ @eyoung16

It’s such a surreal experience to see my sister’s name decaled on the wall of a major museum.

“Into the Forest” is a sprawling mural @yunszuchieh created with nearly 200 youth in Boston, using the forest as a metaphor for life’s many paths. Through the playful, sometimes chaotic imagination of her students, fear kept showing up as a theme. Szu wanted to explore what’s on the other side of that fear — and what she found was discovery.

Her second piece, “Untitled,” an orb of insects made with acrylic paint and glass beads, sits in dialogue with the mural. It invites viewers to look past what’s unsettling. Beneath the “creepy” lies shimmer and shine — a reminder that discovery often begins where fear ends.

We did a cute sister interview with @taiwaneseam_org about her vision — read it there! “Into the Forest” is on view at @mfaboston until Oct 26, 2025.

Congrats to my super starfish sister! Now I can shamelessly take those aesthetic museum pics. ⭐️🪸 taken in Museum of Fine Arts, Boston by @muchieh.y

Spring always makes me think of tomb-sweeping, a practice of the Qingming holiday, and with that, stories of my maternal grandmother. I wrote about her, mangoes, and the significance of her watch. Read about it on my substacky Heirloom Futures 🫰🏼

1. Photo of my late grandmother and aunt
2. Mangoes from a roadside vendor in southern Taiwan
3. Portrait of my grandmother and mom as a child painted by @yunszuchieh (and yes, those are real leaves!)

I wrote a cheeky essay on my anxiety about “starting over” in my 30s—navigating dating after an 11-year relationship and embarking on new career ventures. It’s featured in the anthology The Places Where We Plant Our Stories, which will be available in Boston Public Libraries starting this December. (What’s more radical than a public library??)

As a nod to cheeky publications, here are a few of my faves:
1. Pages from The Bohill Wong Coloring Book. Wong was a Hong Kong-born American artist at @gateway.arts, a creative community focused on advancing the careers of artists with disabilities.
2. Pages from James Birch’s Babylon: Surreal Babies, a collection of French postcards that sparked inspiration for Dadaists and Surrealists.
3. Covers from vintage Chinese magazines. by @muchieh.y
