Meet ab banks @muchobanksy ! ab is born and raised in Oakland and currently working with the People’s Programs @peoplesprograms. They strive to advance food autonomy for Black communities and improve access to healthy produce and foods in Oakland 🌱 We sat down with ab at Oxford Tract, a working research and educational farm on the UC Berkeley campus.

Following a concussion, ab found healing as their brain fog gradually disappeared through working on the land, realizing the transformative power of a holistic relationship with nature. Inspired by the Black Panther Party, ab views gardening as a rebellion against oppressive systems.

For ab, food is political ✊🏿

Interview to come. Thanks ab for sharing your story!

this month i was recognized for my work in the food system, and humbly, i never expect awards or praise for this work. i do it because feeding people and taking care of the land is essential and the right thing to do. i do it for the love of my people and love for the soil. but i am so grateful to be seen!
excited to see where this award takes me and happy to be in good company with my guy Nelson and new friend Deenalee.

free the people, free the land
feed the people, feed the land
liberation in this lifetime!!
onward

Happy birthday to my favorite lady. It’s been 9 months since you left us, but time doesn’t feel real without you. Today you would’ve been 88 and we would’ve been turn up immediately so I’m tryna do that still lol. Trying not to be sad cause 30 years with u- at least I had that.. thank you for all the deep laughter, trips to nowhere but also everywhere lol, sitting and doing nothing, watching tv, good food, walking down every isle of petco and dollar store just to spend more time.. just to buy one thing 😂— even when I was running late to whatever I had to do next, grateful you did that cause now those are the moments I cherish the most. So glad I didn’t wait till you was gone to realize how important you were to me- I always knew that you were my best friend. I know you’re good- I hear u in every baby’s laugh, in my favorite songs and when I eat my favorite foods. The world will never be able to make up for this void I feel without you but I wouldn’t want it to. Love you grandma. Until I see you again. - Lana by @muchobanksy
