Memory Into Making

In creating her range of slip-decorated mugs, Mayon Hanania looked back to her childhood. “I wanted the design to resemble one I could have found in the French countryside.”

Her aunt is a potter in the South of France, and as a young girl, she often visited her home studio. “It seemed like everything in her home was ceramic: the spoons, the lamps, the art… it was very inspiring to see such freedom and creativity.”

This early exposure was formative, and by the time Mayon chose to pursue a creative life herself, she had a wellspring of imagery and references to pull from. She discovered ceramics after moving from France to the United States, recognising it as “a way for me to combine my love for beautiful objects and my need for visual expression.”

Spent an hour at @sanpedro_clayworks loading around 50 pieces into our @cooperworkskilns kiln. One firing at a time, getting closer to completing my latest 300-piece order for @toast 😅🙏⚙️✨ taken in San Pedro, California by @muddythings

A rainy Sunday in San Pedro, we ran outside after breakfast to get the most out of the rain, it was pouring. We walked around with our raincoats but still we were soaking wet. The surfers were surfing ‘Marie’, the air was hot.
Meanwhile Randy at @sanpedro_clayworks was trying to contain the raindrops that were falling inside the studio with a few buckets and protect the outside kiln.
I glazed for a couple of hours and had a real nice time doing so.

The honey jars from all the participants of my workshop came out great, 😊 I really happy about them all and I will probably host another workshop soon.
Thank you again @bassieshuchat @jewishspedro for the opportunity to learn about our Rosh Hashanah and create a meaningful piece simultaneously 🍯🐝🍈 by @muddythings
