“Complexity does not become less complex simply because we close our eyes to it.”

My speech at the Global Health Futures Forum, organised by PVBLIC Foundation at the United Nations Headquarters during UNGA81.

In 2023, I founded MENTAL HEALTH IN FASHION, an initiative connecting fashion, psychology, sustainability & education to address the impact of the fashion system on people inside & outside the industry.

„Nie gut genug“ – “Never Good Enough”

For a long time, I knew this feeling all too well. The feeling of never being good enough, of having to do more, achieve more, prove more. Looking back, I realise how deeply this feeling is embedded in parts of the fashion industry & how effectively it can be used as a motivator.

It works on different levels. On the consumer side, it encourages us to buy more, constantly improve our appearance, follow the next trend or become an ideal that keeps shifting. Within the industry, it can mean having to work harder, take on more responsibilities, be more versatile, deliver more & constantly prove your worth – sometimes without even being paid for it. There is always another level to reach, another expectation to fulfil.

This mechanism can be a powerful driver, but it can also sustain unhealthy dynamics & abusive structures. Of course, the feeling of never being good enough can have many origins, including personal experiences unrelated to fashion. But the industry can reinforce these feelings, make use of them & sometimes even turn them into a business model. When people believe they are the problem, they may fail to recognise the conditions that contribute to these feelings. This is why we need to look beyond individual experiences & question the structures, images & values shaping our industry & society.

I am very happy that tip Berlin has dedicated two pages to Mental Health in Fashion & my work with the campaign in its November issue. A big thank you to journalist Stefan Sauerbrey for taking the time to speak with me & giving this topic visibility.

The conversation touches on my experiences in fashion, the origins & approach of the campaign, my recent invitation to speak at the Global Health Futures Forum during UNGA81 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York & why we need a more differentiated discussion about mental health in fashion & beyond.

A central aim of MENTAL HEALTH IN FASHION is to establish a place for mental health within education. Lasting change requires reaching the next generation, questioning established norms & creating space for a different professional culture. We were pleased to hold a fireside chat at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York, made possible by Cathleen Sheehan’s openness & commitment. Addressing a subject that remains too often taboo also means equipping young people with constructive ways to approach it. Bringing education, the fashion industry & creative platforms together is an important part of this work.

During our exchange at FIT, we also introduced the MENTAL HEALTH IN FASHION category curated for Diane Pernet’s ASVOFF Film Festival & encouraged students to submit their films. Grace Ryan, a FIT student, became a finalist, & her film will screen at DOVER STREET MARKET PARIS in November. Film can offer a way to express experiences that are not always easy to put into words, opening doors to dialogue & helping personal stories reach people who may recognise something of their own experience.

Let’s keep listening, learning from one another & creating spaces for these conversations to continue, in Paris this November & in classrooms and institutions elsewhere. Every exchange can help us break the silence.

For more than ten years, I have experienced how difficult it can be to give mental health in fashion the space it deserves. I was repeatedly laughed at for connecting fashion with psychology & sustainability. Last week, I brought my MENTAL HEALTH IN FASHION campaign to the United Nations Headquarters during UNGA81 in New York, speaking at the Global Health Futures Forum organized by PVBLIC Foundation. Standing there, in a building where heads of state were gathered at the same time to address the issues of our world, made me realise that this work can reach far beyond the boundaries of fashion. I know the road ahead is still long, but I also know how important it is for anyone in fashion who feels powerless or unseen to know that they are not alone, that there are people willing to hear what they have experienced & to have the conversations that are still too often avoided. We need to learn to listen to these voices, to give these conversations a place & to stay connected to ourselves & to each other. Finally, thank you to everyone who has supported me & who has helped me turn the stones put in our way into a solid foundation we can now build on. #MentalHealthInFashion #FashionIndustry #UNGA #UNGA81 #PVBLICatUNGA by @muellerpr

As part of its educational work, Mental Health in Fashion held a guest lecture in the Fashion Design programme at Macromedia University of Applied Sciences, hosted by Prof. Karolin Violante & Prof. Dunja Kopi, addressing the complex relationship between mental health and the fashion industry.

From working conditions and industry pressures to the influence of imagery and social expectations, understanding mental health requires looking at the wider environment in which fashion operates. Bringing these perspectives into education is essential to challenging stigma and encouraging future professionals to question established norms.

Thank you for the invitation and the opportunity to contribute to this exchange.

I can’t remember which show I worked on first, although I suspect it was Raf Simons. What I can say for sure is that even after more than 1,000 shows, I still love those 20 minutes of absolute madness when seating the guests. What makes it especially enjoyable is when it’s a real team effort, as it was at the About You Opera Show, where everyone can rely on their colleagues. It’s one of the most professional teams I know. After the show is before the show, so see you at the next one! #AboutYou #AboutYouOpera #seating #GuestManagement by @muellerpr

Education is an essential part of Mental Health in Fashion, which is why the campaign brings conversations about mental health in the fashion industry to universities around the world. During a recent Fireside Chat at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University’s School of Fashion & Textiles, we discussed the challenges facing the industry & how different perspectives can contribute to change. Students were also invited to submit films for the Mental Health in Fashion category at @asvoff_official, returning to @doverstreetmarketparis this November. The response included some wonderful films, highlighting the importance of giving visibility to diverse voices & experiences. By connecting education, creative projects & opportunities for participation, the campaign aims to move beyond raising awareness & create meaningful connections across the fashion community. #MentalHealthInFashion #PolyU #SchoolOfFashionAndTextiles #HongKong by @muellerpr
