Today we are weighing steers to decide when they’re ready either for butchering or for sale.

For steers, the “right weight” depends on your goal:
For butchering (finishing for beef):
Typical live weight: 1,100–1,400 lbs
At this range, steers usually have good fat cover and marbling, which improves meat quality.
You’ll usually get about 60–65% hanging weight from the live weight.
For selling (market animals):
Feeder steers (not fully finished): 500–900 lbs
Finished steers (ready for slaughter market): 1,100–1,400 lbs
Prices often depend on weight class, so hitting the preferred range for buyers matters.
Besides weight, it’s smart to also look at:
Body condition (not too thin, not overly fat)
Fat cover over ribs and tailhead
Overall health and frame size
If you’re close to that 1,200 lb range and they’re filling out well, you’re usually in a good spot to either butcher or sell depending on your plan.
If you want, tell me their current weights and feeding program, and I can help you decide if they’re ready or should be held a bit longer.
