Can we fix democracy? Maaike Alejandra Moira says we can—but not by waiting for politicians to do it for us.

“Democracy isn’t a machine you hand off to someone else to repair. It’s more like a garden.”

Democracy only works when regular people participate—not just on Election Day. Even those who can’t vote yet can show up, learn the issues, attend meetings and talk with people who see things differently.

“It starts with us deciding that democracy is worth the effort—even when it’s boring, messy or slow. Show up, learn the issues, talk to someone who sees things differently and vote like the future depends on it—because it does.”

Want to get into it? Join us at The Game of Democracy on September 12 .

At 16, Maaike Alejandra Mora can’t vote yet. But she will live with the decisions voters make today.

In our latest Voices 4 Democracy essay, Maaike writes about what it means to watch decisions about reproductive rights, immigration, civil rights, voting rights, healthcare, education, and personal freedoms shape her future while she is still too young to have a vote of her own.

Her message is rooted in a lesson from history: rights gained can also be lost.

From the reversal of Roe v. Wade to ongoing battles over voting rights and immigration, Maaike argues that progress is never guaranteed. Democracy depends on people continuing to participate in it.

And here in Hamilton County, where growing communities like Carmel, Fishers, and Noblesville are filled with people whose lives are shaped by decisions at the ballot box, too many eligible voters still choose not to vote.

Maaike can’t cast a ballot this November.

But you can.

As she writes:

“Your vote not only represents your voice. It also must represent mine.”

The future isn’t something that simply happens. It’s something we build.

I simply could not do it alone!

I cannot put into words how amazing being in Chicago was at @civic_theatre! I’m so glad I got to play my dream role Velma Kelly, meet so many talented and passionate teens, and get to work with amazing staff including @annenicolebeck ! What a special production this was, now I’m tapping out of Chicago!

Thank you and god bless you! (iykyk) by @multi_m_mora
