in black to the future, mark dery (1994), writing within an afro-futurist context poses the question: “can a community whose past has been deliberately rubbed out, and whose energies have subsequently been consumed by the search for legible traces of its history, imagine possible futures?”

this question resonated with my own cultural uncertainty that emerged from the telugu communities’ reliance on oral traditions and folk knowledge for cultural preservation. the significant lack of legible documentation surrounding precolonial telugu practices, rituals and lifestyles has hindered the community’s ability to evolve autonomously.

as a result of this limited archival record, substantial gaps exist in contemporary understandings of the telugu identity, particularly in relation to fashion, linguistics and religious symbolism. this absence becomes evident when creatives in the industry try to make culturally authentic concepts, which often end up translating as blurred amalgamations borrowed from neighbouring cultures.

reframing mark dery’s question through a telugu lens, thu thu thu: the experience acts a research methodology to speculate an archive of decolonial telugu iterations and utopian futures via cross-cultural collaboration.
