Last month, the first results from Octopus, the world-first adaptive trial for progressive MS, were released.

Interim results found that alpha lipoic acid showed enough promise as a potential treatment for progressive MS to continue testing in Stage 2, while metformin will not continue.

In this video, PLATYPUS Country Lead Investigator Professor Simon Broadley explains what the Stage 1 findings mean and what happens next, while Janine Watson shares why getting answers faster matters for people living with progressive MS.

PLATYPUS is the Australian extension of Octopus, helping accelerate the search for better treatments for progressive MS.

A panel bringing together clinical and lived experience perspectives will explore how MS treatment decisions are made today at MS Australia's National Symposium on MS Medications.

Chaired by Medicines Australia CEO Liz de Somer, the panel will feature neurologist Professor Richard Macdonell and MS Nurse Specialist Belinda Bardsley from Austin Health, alongside MS Australia Lived Experience Expert Panel (LEEP) members Connie Janiszewski, Kate Casey and Rebecca Small.

This research symposium, held in partnership with The Florey, will reflect on three decades of progress in the development of MS medications, their impact on care and quality of life, what has been achieved, what remains unmet, and what comes next.

To mark the @mssociety’s 80th anniversary, MS Australia CEO Rohan Greenland presented President and CEO Dr Tim Coetzee with a very special gift at the Society’s first-ever national research symposium in New York.

Created by MS Australia’s Lived Experience Expert Panel (LEEP) member and artist Deanna Renee ( @circularblooms ), the specially commissioned artwork centres on one of Deanna’s signature ethereal MRI mandalas, surrounded by Australian and US imagery and vibrant floral elements.

Rohan is attending the anniversary events as an official guest, joining the National MS Society as it celebrates 80 years of global leadership in MS research and advocacy.

The celebrations also mark the launch of the Campaign to End MS, a five-year, US$1 billion effort to accelerate research breakthroughs and expand access to care and support.

Deanna’s artwork was warmly received and will now have a permanent home at the National MS Society’s headquarters in New York.
