[ M72R : 0021 ] 50 years ago #OTD 09.09.1972. – 3 seconds of controversy! USSR win the men's basketball final 51-50 against a previously unbeaten USA team (they had won gold at the previous seven Olympics). The American players began to celebrate what they thought was a victory. But their joy was cut short when the USSR coach claimed he had called for a time-out prior to the second free-throw. The officials bizarrely decided that both free-throws should be scored but that play should be restarted with three seconds on the clock. After two farcical attempts to restart play, Ivan Edeshko made a long pass to Aleksandr Belov who collected the ball under the hoop and made a lay-up as the buzzer sounded. The ball dropped through the hoop to give the USSR a controversial 51-50 victory Consequently the Americans refused to attend the medal ceremony to accept their silver medals, creating one of the iconic podium moments in Olympic history. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Munich 1972 & 100th Birthday of Otl Aicher - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - #Munich72CollectedDotCom - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - #OnThisDay _ #USSR #USA #Basketball #GoldMedal #Sports – #OtlAicher #Munich72 #1972Olympics #MunichOlympics #München1972 #MünchenOlympia #OlympicGames #LesJeuxOlympiques #JuegosOlimpicos #五輪 #オリンピック #올림픽 #OlympicCollection #Olympicsgram - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - by @munich72resource

[ M72R : 0015 ] – Olympiapark architecture – ➔ @guenterbehnisch100 © Photo : Christian Kandzia – Via @worldofpictograms - Just like Otl Aicher, architect Günter Behnisch would have turned 100 this year. He passed away in 2010, but left behind a legacy that is known far beyond the borders of Germany. Together with Frei Otto, he developed the Olympic site on which the 1972 Olympic Games were held. From 27 June to 3 October, the exhibition BAUEN FÜR EINE OFFENE GESELLSCHAFT can be seen in Stuttgart. It highlights his life and work - and shows Günter Behnisch's desire to translate liberal, democratic and humane principles into architecture. For those who cannot travel to Stuttgart, there is an online exhibition as well. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Munich 1972 & 100th Birthday of Otl Aicher - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - #Munich72CollectedDotCom - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - #OlympiaPark #OlympicPark #Architecture #Munich #München #Exhibition #Photography #Architektur #architekturfotografie #BMW – #OtlAicher #Munich72 #1972Olympics #MunichOlympics #München1972 #MünchenOlympia #OlympicGames #LesJeuxOlympiques #JuegosOlimpicos #五輪 #オリンピック #올림픽 #OlympicCollection #Olympicsgram - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - by @munich72resource

[ M72R : 0012 ] – Image and text ➔ @markholtdesign – Dept XI’s Elena Winschermann, creator of the official Waldi mascot. Winschermann had an internship with Aicher at Dept. XI’s first studio in Garching, Munich. She didn’t return to college realising she could learn everything from Aicher himself. She was the youngest on the initial team, just 19 or so when she joined in ‘67. In 1970 she became project leader for Waldi. She would later marry head of production, Walter Schwaiger, who joined the team in ‘68 and following the Games would form their own Munich studio, Büro WinschermannSchwaiger. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Munich 1972 & 100th Birthday of Otl Aicher - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - #Munich72CollectedDotCom - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - #Design #Branding #Colour #Gestaltung #BrandGuidelines #Designer #GraphicDesign #Waldi #Mascot – #OtlAicher #Munich72 #1972Olympics #MunichOlympics #München1972 #MünchenOlympia #OlympicGames #LesJeuxOlympiques #JuegosOlimpicos #五輪 #オリンピック #올림픽 #OlympicCollection #Olympicsgram - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - by @munich72resource
