After 26 years, James Turrell has reimagined his iconic light installation „The Inner Way“ for the Munich Re Art Collection, creating a unique new colour experience.

The switch to LED technology presented the opportunity - building on the static light image from 1999 - to set the light and colour in motion along the 150-metre-long passage.

In a sequence of seven composed colour worlds with fluid transitions, visitors can now experience how different contrasts, dynamic colour blends and moods have an immediate effect on the senses.
The architectural boundaries of the underground space virtually disappear in the process. This creates an impressive spatial and colour experience that immerses viewers in a world of colour and light - a moving encounter, and one that subtly challenges their perceptions.

A new chapter for the Munich Re Art Collection

After 30 years of visionary work, Susanne Ehrenfried-Bergmann will step down as Chief Curator of the Munich Re Art Collection in August. Her passion and expertise have shaped the collection into one with international standing - and one that brings renowned and emerging artists into dialogue with our workspaces. From striking light installations in underground passages to site-specific artworks in courtyards and outdoor spaces, her legacy can be seen in every detail. She has also championed cultural responsibility through partnerships with academies and organisations.

We are pleased to welcome Maja Emmerlich as her successor. After working at various cultural institutions, she has been reinforcing the Corporate Art team as a curator since 2023. Susanne and Maja have worked together on numerous national and international projects and, above all, exchanged ideas on possible strategies for the future. With Maja‘s experience and with fresh perspective, she will continue to evolve the collection and explore new ways of integrating art into our global workplace.

Thank you, Susanne! Welcome, Maja!

Reviving a masterpiece: James Turrell‘s ‚The Inner Way‘ restored to perfection!

After five months of careful renovation, James Turrell’s iconic light installation ‚The Inner Way‘ is now glowing in new splendour!

Created for Munich Re over 25 years ago, Turrell’s masterful use of invisible light transforms the underground passageway into a mesmerising space of colour and Illusion. With 630 LED lights and over 200 metres of optical fibre, the installation now shines with new brilliance while retaining its original magic.

This modern upgrade ensures that the light installation will continue to captivate and inspire for generations to come.

Nevin Aladag
Pattern Kinship, Bubbles, yellow red green, 2022
Pattern Kinship, Orbit, Candy, 2002
Waterjet cut aluminium, acrylic paint

Nevin Aladag‘s sculptural interventions break with the traditional norms of sculpture as well as with connotations, conventions and preconceived expectations, often placing everyday elements in new contexts.

In her ‚Pattern Kinship‘ series, the artist brings together a variety of ornaments and patterns that have been used in different cultures as Venetian blinds to protect the private sphere. Aladag unites styles and forms from different regions and times, collected over the years, to create historically impossible, unique and fascinating compositions in bright and vibrant colours.

Fu Ning
Broken Traffic, 2021
Acrylic on canvas

Fu Ning explores the production and distribution of digital images on social media and the impact these ever-expanding visual worlds have on us humans and our perception.

The artist uses everyday images of unknown people from around the world and incorporates them into her compositions. She combines fragments of digital content from different contexts and transforms them into painting, translating the impression of fleeting images into dynamic, sinuous brushstrokes.
In her seemingly abstract paintings, Fu Ning creates new realities that invite the viewer to pause, to pay attention and to interrupt the speed of our time for a moment.

#WorksFromTheCollection // Tornike Abuladze, Date Screens, Sandblasted Glass, 2022-2023

The current date can be seen on the lock screen of most smartphones. This is the starting point for Tornike Abuladze's work "Date Screens" in the form of 365 stylized smartphones made of dark glass. The simple and minimalist form of the work is reminiscent of the seriality of conceptual art: the dates of a year are engraved by hand into the cut glass blocks using a sandblasting process.

On closer inspection, the contrast between the high-gloss surface and the slight irregularity of the engraving is striking. The viewer is reflected in the surface, becomes part of the perpetual calendar and can visualize the meaning of time: a memento mori as a hybrid of technology and craftsmanship.

Currently on loan in the exhibition "The World in My Hand" (19. April-31. October) @alexander.tutsek.stiftung

#New in our collection // Sofia Clausse, Towards the Bluest Within, 2024

The artwork Towards the Bluest Within delves into the ancient symbol of the labyrinth, often seen as a spiritual journey of finding oneself. The painting explores this concept with a unique blend of painted and paper lines. These lines, in white and black on canvas, and pink and black as paper cutouts, weave together, interact with one another, creating an intriguing interplay of paths. Sometimes clear, sometimes erratic, they symbolize the journey of discovery and renewal. This challenges the viewer's perception and encourages introspection – it makes the artwork the ideal companion at a meeting point to stimulate encounters and dialog.

Taro Suzuki, X Mass, Gulf and Japanese-American, 2017

The initial form in the selected works of Taro Suzuki are concentric circles. Deliberately placed disruptions – a slight shift in the pattern – give the ornaments the appearance of dynamically pulsating planes that seem to extend far beyond the edge of the painting.
The use of strong color contrasts potentiates the powerful energy inherent in Suzuki's work. The iridescent silver of the negative space, which changes from light to dark depending on the viewer's perspective, reinforces the intense visual effect.

Christian Muscheid, Belize (from the series “Archetypes”), 2023

Christian Muscheid is a German painter who explores the interaction of colours and shapes in his large-scale acrylic paintings. He brings simple geometric shapes such as a circle onto the canvas. He speaks here of archetypal forms, whose communicative power he explores in different ways. This means he examines elementary images and forms that have always existed and that can thereby also be models for something new.
A striking magenta circle fills almost the entire canvas and is framed by a bright orange background. The strong colour combination of magenta and orange creates an exceptionally vibrant, undeniable aura, so that the viewer is drawn into the painting by the power of the colour.
