The festive hour approaches, and the joyful Wainwright-McGarrigle holiday saga continues!

We’re returning to New York City’s Town Hall on December 6 for “Manhattan for the Holidays,” continuing a beloved family tradition benefitting The Kate McGarrigle Fund and Folk Cancer: The Kate McGarrigle Project.

Joined by special guests Cyndi Lauper, Alice Phoebe Lou, Loudon Wainwright III, Lucy Wainwright Roche, and more, the evening will feature festive favorites, family classics, and unforgettable collaborations - all in honor of our mother, Kate McGarrigle, and to help raise money in the fight against cancer.

House of Rufus members get early access to VIP tickets starting tomorrow at 9am ET, followed by the general ticket pre-sale Thursday at 12pm ET. General onsale begins Friday at 12pm ET.

Can’t wait to see you all there with bells, lights, whistles, tinsel, and menorahs on! by @murmrr

Another summer out East.

Brandi Carlile. Ms. Lauryn Hill. John Mulaney. Marcus King. Molly Tuttle. Mark Normand. Gipsy Kings. Lyle Lovett. Steel Pulse. Stephen Marley. Matsu. Joel Mesler.

Music, comedy, paintings, salt air, late nights. A lot of people together in beautiful places, making something that wasn’t there the day before.

We’re lucky to work with artists this good, partners who believe in what we do, and audiences who keep showing up.

That’s the whole trick. Make something happen. Make people happy.

Then the lights go down, everybody drives home, and for a brief flash the night belongs to nobody.

See you next summer.

Last month, I photographed Emily A. Sprague, who you might know from her work with Florist. She performed a solo set of beautifully moody and contemplative ambient music at Town Hall while opening for Grouper. Her new album, Cyano, just dropped last week. Check it out.

Two nights of Grouper at The Town Hall.

Cassettes turning. Samples drifting in and out. Guitar played in strange, asymmetrical patterns. Dissonance. Liz Harris’s voice appearing and disappearing—haunting, beatific, ephemeral, barely tethered to the room.

Behind her, an abstract film flickered across the stage, recalling the handmade cinema of Ken Jacobs and Stan Brakhage: light, grain, interruption, ghosts.

The audience stayed almost impossibly quiet. Each night, 1500 people holding still together. Then the final note disappeared and the whole room erupted.

For a little while, @townhallnyc became something else entirely.

A real artistic moment in New York.

This is why we do Murmrr.

Murmrr and Utopia present the NY premiere of About A Hero, directed by Piotr Winiewicz and based on the story written by an Artificial Intelligence Agent inspired by Werner Herzog.

7 PM - Doors
8 PM - Screening
9:30 PM - Q&A with director Piotr Winiewicz and KASPAR, the artificial intelligence behind the About A Hero story.

Join us for a special screening of ABOUT A HERO, Piotr Winiewicz’s genre-bending film created from a story generated by KASPAR, an AI trained - with Werner Herzog’s permission - on Herzog’s body of work.

Following the screening, Winiewicz will participate in a one-of-a-kind Q&A alongside KASPAR, exploring the film’s central questions around authorship, originality, consent, creativity and the limits of machine-made meaning. The conversation will offer audiences a rare opportunity to hear directly from both the filmmaker and the AI system that helped generate the story behind the film.
