Titled : Zowie..
I made this piece while reflecting on how it is that a perfect God shows love and sacrifice even when we don’t deserve it.
Imagine He gave up His life just to show us that we’re worthy.
Isn’t that wonderful!!

Now Zowie keeps moving , she keeps living just like how life and love never stop.

Trust the process! 😎

This wall needed lots of love before we could put the first paint on it. But with the professional support of local craftsmen the wall got fixed.
Painting a community wall needs the ability to step back and trust that it will be well in the end. You can‘t control everything and need to let go. The goal is involve the children as much as possible. Here in Kampala, Uganda we filled color with the children and gave the specific areas to cover. Later in the process we let them sketch their own ideas on the wall. We were a team of 6 artists to lead the community in the process.

Within 2 weeks we finished the wall and celebrated the end with a party!

„What kind of mark do you want to leave behind when you go back to Switzerland?“ Emanuel asks me in our last week in Kampala, and I think for a moment before answering: „I hope that after we leave, this wall belongs fully to the community, that the kids can say they painted it, not some artists from far away.“ He asks back how that transition should happen. I answer with one word: „Party.“

And that’s exactly what we did. Music, soda, cake, and every kid who had touched that wall in the weeks before. We took a group photo, then Emanuel asked the kids to look at the wall together one more time. A moment later, all of them ran up to it, pointing proudly at their own drawings. He asked each child what they had painted. At the end, he told them: from now on, you take care of this wall.

He had understood exactly what I meant. He handed the wall over to the kids. And they stood in front of it afterward, arms crossed, proud, as if they were already guarding it. taken in Kampala, Uganda, East Africa by @musinguzi18

Where there is care, things can bloom. 🌸

That’s why we chose to represent a mother as the main motif of the mural, an idea that came from @ssekittokaluleemmanuel , the leader of @facesupuganda.

Like in many communities, in Masanafu, it’s the mothers’ relentless care and work that holds the community together. By painting a mom on this big wall, we wanted to highlight and appreciate all the work that is done in the dark.

On the mural, you can see that from her, everything else is flowing: scenes of children playing, flowers and butterflies, trees, and colors.

When you are surrounded by loving care and peace (the dove on the right), you can flourish.

So, this mural is a reminder for us to care for each other and to celebrate each blossom, however little it might be. taken in Kampala, Uganda, East Africa by @musinguzi18

„FFE BAMU” means „WE ARE ONE” in Luganda.

We gave this title to the wall to express what we experienced working in the neighbourhood.

In Buganda culture, “Ffe bamu” reflects a way of life where community comes before individual boundaries. Neighbours are often addressed as brothers and sisters, whether or not they’re related by blood. Children are seen as belonging to the whole community, not just their own household, and it’s common for any adult nearby to look after a child who isn’t theirs. Meals, tools, and even childcare are shared freely, because helping each other isn’t a favour, it’s simply how life works.

We experienced this firsthand while creating the mural. Everyone was part of the painting, no matter their background, and that’s exactly what we wanted to express on the wall.

Smiling in the burning community!
Titled: The Joyful Becoming. This artwork celebrates the beauty of human connection and the nurturing spirit found within communities. The central figures a caregiver and child symbolize protection, love, and continuity between generations. The fragmented and burnt surfaces represent life’s challenges, while the smiling faces affirm the persistence of hope despite adversity. The surrounding figures create a narrative of collective growth, emphasizing that becoming is not an individual journey but one shaped by family, community, and shared experiences. Through layers of drawing, collage, and distressed textures, the work reflects the resilience of children who continue to thrive within changing social and economic environments. A couple of weeks ago
I joined this residency and it has kept on reminding me of how growth doesn’t come in loudly and easily
It has now become a space for slowing down and paying much attention on every conversation from my mentors , through the studio sessions held and all the shared moments and this has now started shaping how I think about my practice as an artist.
I’m so grateful for this opportunity and excited, hoping that the best is yet to come.
