There’s a version of tourism that extracts, and a version that invests. Meet the Omani entrepreneurs investing in local communities in Jebel Akhdar and beyond... 🇴🇲

@mutterah_om is a tourism company founded by @nooralmanthari and her father alongside Dhofari brothers Abduhakim and Hamed. They are building the second kind.

Their approach is community-led by design: the guides, hosts, and producers on every experience are local people, sharing knowledge and access on their own terms.

The company started as an idea on a mountainside in Dhofar, where Noor and Abduhakim were already running community tourism experiences through Noor’s co-founded social enterprise, @ghudu.om. Mutterah has since grown to offer experiences across #Oman - Dhofar, Muscat, Dakhiliya, Jebel Akhdar - with Al-Sharqiya and Musandam in development.

What distinguishes Mutterah is the relationships they are building with local communities - Laith, the village elder who welcomes you his rosewater distillery; Aunty Sharifa who has climbed the same mountain pathways her entire life; the local family in old Muttrah recreating the experience of an Omani wedding for their guests; with the community kitchen that cooks the rice and meat way it has cooked for their guests for generations.

Those relationships take time to build and can’t be replicated by a company that treats communities as a backdrop.

⁨ خور الملح هو معلم طبيعي وتاريخي واقتصادي بارز يقع في ولاية قريات بمحافظة مسقط في سلطنة عُمان، ويبعد نحو 6 كيلومترات عن مركز الولاية. يُعد هذا الموقع من أقدم مصادر استخراج الملح الجيد في المنطقة، ويُمثل إرثاً ثقافياً حافلاً توارثته الأجيال من الأجداد والآباء حتى اليوم.

The rose harvest in Jebel Akhdar is having a moment on social media - but what does this mean for the local communities who preserve this centuries old tradition?

Every spring, the terraced farms of Jebel Akhdar fill with more and more visitors drawn by images that have been circulating on social media for the past few years.

The mountain in bloom is spectacular, and local communities have welcomed the attention - it has brought meaningful income to villages where rose water distillation has been a primary livelihood for generations.

But what does sustainable cultural tourism actually look like in the age of Instagram, and who gets to define it?

The rose harvest is a living tradition in #Oman, practised continuously since at least the 9th century. The families who distil the rosewater, tend the farms, and carry the knowledge are the same families who have always done it. Tourism has added a new layer.

What we saw on Jebel Akhdar suggested that the key is in who holds the access - when local community members are the guides, hosts, and intermediaries, and when the income flows directly to the people whose knowledge is being shared, tourism and tradition can coexist.

We spent a day on the mountain with @mutterah_om - Omani tourism company providing authentic experiences led by local communities - to see what that looks like in practice.
