This Men’s Mental Health Month, I reflect on my journey from the teachings of my youth. Born in 1973 and raised by a strong-minded mother who did her best without the guidance of her own father, I learned to navigate life with the tools she provided. My own father was rarely present and didn’t offer the life lessons I needed.I grew up believing that vulnerability was a weakness, becoming a protector and warrior for myself and those around me. However, in that strength, I often overlooked my own mental health. Who protects those who protect? Who helps the helpers?As a father of seven amazing children, I am incredibly proud of them for breaking free from some of the trauma I caused by embodying the “strong man” stereotype. Yet, I recognize that they have not completely healed, and neither have I. Healing from my own childhood while addressing the impact of my past on my children is a complex journey. I realize now that true strength lies in acknowledging our emotions and seeking support. If I had learned the coping skills I’m discovering now, I believe I could have been a better version of myself and less angry in my younger years. It’s never too late to start healing—both for myself and for my children.
