(Recap) July 12 - August 30 2026 The Last Resort Artist Retreat Open House/Open Studios

TLRAR Cohort II
Folasade Ologundudu
Murjoni Merriweather
Freddie L. Rankin Il
Jasmine Murrell

Special thanks to all who came out in support of our program.

The Last Resort Artist Retreat (TLRAR) is an international residency based in Baltimore MD that invites four individuals for a six-week long cohort - creatives occupying space in the visual, sound-based, movement-based, culinary, and literary arts, as well as entrepreneurs whose interests seek to enrich the arts. Like many, we believe the creative community elevates society, and to foster this, we find leisure and communion with others a natural transmitting process for human growth.

Charm City Cultural Cultivation (Charmccc) is a 501c3 non-profit anchor organization with three core programs; Zora’s Den, The Last Resort Artist Retreat, Black Baltimore Digital Database. Our headquarters also serves as a hub for additional art and cultural programming that engages with the concerns of the general community, with consideration to our overall interests in working towards outcomes that benefit the city and its citizens at large. We welcome collaboration with like minded organizations as well as with allies who understand the importance of our mission, as we continue to analyze the landscape of the cultural ecosystem, locally, nationally and internationally.

Murjoni Merriweather works in clay, and what she’s really doing is keeping a record.

P A V E M E N T, her solo installation with AYE Gallery and Altar Studio, showcases vessels that draw from Black ceramic tradition and Black literary inheritance, built to honor the authors, artists, and ancestors who made the road.

Collecting art teaches that preservation is a decision somebody makes. Someone chooses what gets kept, what gets written down, what gets handed to the next person.

In her latest installation, @mvrjoni is making that choice in clay, holding fragility and permanence in the same object. by @mvrjoni

JE: Last weekend, we closed P A V E M E N T. And man, it’s been a bitter sweet. From getting that first studio visit with Sola, to a few weeks later receiving Black in Blues in the mail from Malcolm. Both of these moments led into my second full installation. Between those moments and now, I’ve done historic research at The Black Archive at Alma | Lewis w Kilolo , to physical research at The Steel Yard w guidance from Chantel. From there learning soooo many different techniques from different people. To coming home and being able to mend all of these things together. The process of this show has changed my perspective on my self independence. It’s uncomfortable tbh. But I lean into it, because we can make beautiful and meaningful things with good people by your side. P A V E M E N T is a beginning.

All starting from opening myself, trusting, leaning, learning. All starting from asking questions. All starting from a visit and a book. 🏺

Special thank you to @thesolasystem , @elleffpea & @ayespaceforus for your trust, talks, encouragement. @athooperhouse for having me. @malcolmjenkins for your inspiration. @kilololuckett & @alma_lewis_pgh for your constant support and love. @ceramicsattheyard.techaccnt , @_chanib , @juanaseemyprints @reese.brax @frankrayola for being my supportive clay family in RI, @urbanhipsta for our conversations and collaboration, @mashondatifrere for your words and wisdom, @jo_nanajian for always being my biggest support. @apoetnamednate for your building skills. @amiradamani for your amazing presence and encouragement. @byaib & @niy.vmi for your amazing eyes ( and documentation). @lucys_lamps for illuminating the space, @atmamakokos for being apart of our planning and programming and of course my parents for always holding it down 💕

Thank you to everyone who came to the show, spent time in the space, bought a piece, helped me fire, had a conversation with me, gave me words of affirmation, gave me a hug..you are so so so appreciated.

Thank you to every author that was included in this installation, and thank you to every author ever. You make history.

Designed to foster renewal and reflection, the retreat offers a curated experience that encourages participants to step away from distractions and embrace the transformative potential of new perspectives. By prioritizing space for rest, creativity, and exploration, the residency empowers artists to reconnect with their vision, nurture their craft, and uncover the lasting benefits of intentional withdrawal from the demands of everyday life.

Refreshments will be served.

I took this video on May 2nd of this year, the morning after I finished making all 100 of my pots from PAVEMENT. I was at a residency in Rhode Island at the time ( with kiva). It feels like this wasn’t taken too long ago, but a lot can happen in 3 months. We still sit in gratitude and growth. I’m proud of myself for sure :) I appreciate these moments a lot by @mvrjoni
