This summer, I had the incredible opportunity to work in Puerto Rico’s El Yunque National Forest (the only tropical rainforest in the U.S.) as part of the GEO-TREES project. Our work focused on measuring forest biomass to help calibrate carbon sequestration models with the hopes to contribute to broader ecological research in El Yunque.

This experience allowed me to learn about the history, ecology, and incredible endemic species that make El Yunque so unique. I gained some Caribbean species identification skills and had the chance to see countless endemic birds, frogs, insects, and even tarantulas (veryyyyyy scary for me).

Experiences like this continue to remind me why I love studying biology. Learning plant identification, mechanisms, and ecological + cultural significance makes me appreciate the fauna and flora that goes into each lei. Making lei has become a way for me to honor both the science and cultural significance. Although I spent 6 weeks in Puerto Rico, I unfortunately did not make lei, just did a lot of learning.

Beyond the science, Puerto Rico felt familiar. Though halfway across the world from each other, I was amazed by how much similarities Guam and Puerto Rico share with their resilience, culture, and struggles. Even though I was far from home, I didn’t feel too far.
