I’m up for re-election to the @wearethemu Executive Committee!

If you’re an MU member in Scotland and Northern Ireland, please use your vote and vote for me!

Sitting on the EC continues to be a fascinating and humbling experience. It’s given me a real insight into the issues facing musicians across the UK and the opportunity to help shape MU policy, protect musicians’ rights and fight for fair pay especially dealing with AI and Streaming over the last few years.

I’d love the opportunity to continue this work and can with your help.

On a recent flight the sky was doing something magical. Clouds above, clouds below and the sun reflected on lakes on the ground. I always find myself looking out the window and thinking when flying but this was something else. #composerlife #flight #overview #overvieweffect #travel by @mwhitesidecomp

The walk began as I was expecting, a walking tour with historical facts about Strasbourg combined with musical interludes from composers who also described their work. A kind of walking pitch / history session. This ended up in the European Parliament for a guided tour.

As we left the Parliament and walked toward ARTE Broadcaster the headphones started picking up what we thought was a broadcast interview and interference. As we got closer it got stronger until…. We were noticed. The interview was happening outside and it became increasingly manic and absurd. The presenter beckoned us to follow over a bridge sharing a stream of consciousness philosophy on bridges. The street artist from earlier that felt like a nice chance occurrence was on the bridge improvising, the presenter became increasingly manic engaging passers by. But were they? Or were they fellow performers? Was the book he picked up from an outdoor library a prop or a chance occurrence? The line had totally disappeared. Who was performer, prop, passer by, audience, participant???

It was a very surreal experience that I wasn’t expecting. The not expecting made it weirder and made the effect even greater but not knowing how long it was going to last was disconcerting.

I think it was a brilliant idea, really well executed but highlighted to me the need to tell audiences and participants when something will end so they can make a choice. But then, if we knew would it have been as effective? I don’t know. It is something to ponder.

Years ago @mayovichink introduced me to the art of Zdzisław Beksiński. Abstract post apocalyptic surreal paintings. The underwater landscapes I saw today on Loch Long really reminded me of his paintings. Check out his work if you don’t know it already #composerlife #composer #scuba #scubadiving @scotsac @kdscuba by @mwhitesidecomp

Underwater mosaics, Roman ruins and a U-Boat rudder… yesterday’s diving was rather cool in Baia. A Roman city that sunk overnight because of the volcano underneath only found during the 60 and still being uncovered. Not been on a dive like it! As is always the way underwater life lives on what we have left. #composerlife #scuba #underwater #archeology by @mwhitesidecomp

This week in Copenhagen at @unmdk festival. Was invited to talk about Making Money in Music (it’s complicated but funding applications!), listening to some great new music and going to two different British Embassy receptions (one involving a Koala…!) and meeting the new Scottish Government representative to the Nordic Countries.
The life of a composer traveling, hearing music, talking and sharing and occasionally pride celebrating koalas. #composerlife #newmusic #denmark #contemporarymusic by @mwhitesidecomp
