On this day in history (April 25, 1792), highwayman and rapist Nicolas Jacques Pelletier became the first man to ever be executed by guillotine. The new device was invented to make capital punishment "painless" for the condemned, but in a classic oopsie, it just made it really fast and easy.

The guillotine soon became a symbol of a bloody revolution in France, whose supporters championed the device as "the people's avenger." 228 years later, it remains the preferred method of execution for the criminally wealthy. by @mx.signals
