Australia, Cornell, True Crime, Real Nights In Newcastle: LEIGH LEIGH
Snowtown? You want a disturbing Australian movie, then watch one from my hometown. Because I believe EVERY Australian, especially young adult men, should be watching Blackrock (1997) RIGHT NOW.
Blackrock is a 1997 Australian teen drama thriller film directed by Steven Vidler with the screenplay by Nick Enright. The film was adapted from the play of the same name, also written by Enright, which was inspired by the murder of Leigh Leigh. The film follows Jared, a young surfer who witnesses his friends r-ping a girl. When she is found murdered the next day, Jared is torn between revealing what he saw and protecting his friends. (*Very relevant to today)
The murder of Leigh Leigh, born Leigh Rennea Mears, occurred on 3 November 1989 while she was attending a 16-year-old boy’s birthday party at Stockton Beach, New South Wales, on the east coast of Australia. The 14-year-old girl from Fern Bay was assaulted by a group of boys after she returned distressed from a s-xual encounter on the beach that a reviewing judge later called non-consensual. After being kicked and spat on by the group, Leigh left the party. Her naked body was found in the sand dunes nearby the following morning, with severe g-nital damage and a crushed skull. So, yes …very, very relevant to today.
Even if you just watch Blackrock for Heath Ledger’s first film …you will still walk away HAUNTED by Bojana Novakovic’s Tracy.
No excuses - you can stream on Amazon, or on Youtube for free:
