« Il est là. Il habite ici. »

...

Two brands. Two worlds. One shared conviction.
Whether on an Excess catamaran at anchor or on a river with a JAWS in the bag, the gear doesn’t define the adventure. It makes it possible.

Some more BTS footage aboard @we_are_explore during @longitude181 ’s “Whale Way” expedition.

One of my responsibilities was to capture vertical drone images of every sperm whale we encountered. These images weren’t just for the communication team, they were also part of the scientific protocol.

From above, drone imagery can help estimate a whale’s length and document small, unique details on its skin that can be used to identify individuals.

Unfortunately, some of those details are often scars and wounds caused by collisions with ships.

And that’s exactly what this mission is about: gaining a better understanding of sperm whales, their behavior, their habits, and where they feed, rest, and travel, to help identify areas where protection measures and speed restrictions could make a real difference.

As some of you may know, I quite often find myself aboard all kinds of ships. Not only for the joy of sailing, but to do my job: capturing images, stories, and memories.
Here’s a small glimpse behind the scenes of my latest adventure aboard @we_are_explore, studying sperm whales along the French Riviera with @longitude181.

Being a one-man media crew means being ready to capture every moment, both in photo and video, without slowing down the action. For that, the Sony A1 II has proven to be exactly the right tool: uncompromising image quality, a seamless switch between stills and video, and a much lighter, more efficient setup than juggling two specialized camera bodies.

Sometimes, the best camera isn’t only the one that delivers the best image, it’s the one that lets you be ready when the story happens.

Wild river.
Catamaran deck.
Same quest for freedom.

@aubertinp_kayak_fr opens the Riders Edition series by @excess_catamarans → a meeting point between sailing and the adventurers pushing the limits of their discipline.

From Costa Rica to the Balkans, Paul runs rivers few boats can reach.
The JAWS packraft gets him there: in a backpack, on a bike, or aboard an Excess.

One philosophy → follow your own line.

This journey through the land of ice is coming to an end. For three weeks, we explored from the Westfjords to Sauðárkrókur, through the Golden Circle and beyond. And we had a blast.
Otherworldly landscapes, raw elements, untouched nature… but also, sometimes, mass tourism, careless visitors, and profit-driven experiences. Every story has two sides.
But we’ll be back. Probably with our campervan, heading further into the wild, towards the Highlands, Hornstrandir, and the North Coast.
I still have a few images from Reykjavík, but that’s another mood for another time.
Thanks for being part of this Iceland journey.
Any idea on what comes next?

“Íshellir”
#SonyA7IV | 12-24mm f/2.8 Sony GM

Íshellir, or ice cave. Seeing a glacier is already something. We don’t often stand in front of such a mass of ice. But stepping onto it, feeling it move, hearing it crack, and venturing deeper… that’s an entirely different experience.
Inside an ice cave, the world changes. Textures, reflections, light, and transparency shape a landscape that feels from an other planet.
But unlike their stone counterparts, this underground world is temporary. A fragile maze of ice, water, and snow, constantly evolving, and inevitably melting. It could be next year, it could be in ten. But one thing is certain: no two visits are ever the same.
Special thanks to @explorers.is for making this exploration possible.

Kirkja, or the Icelandic for church. Long before these structures appeared, this land belonged to the old gods of the Norse mythology. But over time, as beliefs shifted, churches began to grow across the island. Today, they often feel like hidden architectural gems, quietly tucked away in small villages.

“Jökull”

Jökull, or glacier. One of Iceland’s defining landmarks. As I mentioned in a previous post, exploring Iceland in winter also means embracing near-Arctic darkness. So the exploration doesn’t stop at dusk.
Headlamps on, we step into the night, discovering the massive silhouette of Vatnajökull, the largest glacier in Iceland, and the second largest in Europe.
Out here, I like to play with the contrast between shadow and light. Sometimes, a single beam of light is enough to remind us how small we are.

Sandur, or braided rivers in English, are among the most striking landscapes in Iceland. From the ground, they seem chaotic. But from above, they reveal an intricate network of endless patterns shaped by melting glaciers.
Fortunately, as a photographer out in the wild, my trusty Mavic is never far out of reach.

“Aurora Borealis”
#SonyA7IV | 16-35mm f/2.8 Sony GM II
5 sec | f/2.8 | Iso 3200
Aurora Borealis, or northern lights, can feel like some kind of scam. The magic of physics makes them pop vividly on digital sensors (even phones), but to the human eye, they can sometimes look like a faint grey cloud, nothing more.
Of course, you need to follow the right conditions: checking forecasts, monitoring the KP index that measures solar activity, finding clear skies, and facing north (in the Northern Hemisphere).
Then, if everything aligns, you can witness charged particles from the Sun colliding with atoms in the high atmosphere. These collisions excite oxygen and nitrogen, which then emit light in different colors: green, red, and sometimes purple.
