Reflections from my first semester of clinical rotations:

I’ve leaned into the concept of dialectical thinking over the past couple months. Being in PA school has reminded me that it is possible to feel the most challenged yet the most rewarded at the same time, exhausted yet energized, self-conscious yet capable, and resentful yet grateful, among many other competing feelings, but I’ve learned to resist the need to complete and rather allow them to exist simultaneously side by side bc that’s the only way forward in this career and in life. This has been the most challenging semester of my life, AND I’m thankful for the opportunity to continue growing into a better version of myself.

I chose a perennial —
knowing that through changing seasons,
she would persist and bloom come spring;
rooted in the solid foundation of my soil,
providing gentle nourishment
throughout winter —

But even the perennial can’t withstand
the coldest of winters
or changing climate…

Loosening my soil underneath,
no longer providing a solid foundation
for her roots to take hold,
so they slowly slip away —

Away from the warmth of the soil
into the cold of winter —
knowing that when spring comes,
she will no longer bloom as she once did…

But her seeds are carried away
by the strong winter winds
guiding her to a new place
she can call home;
a home with fresh soil
welcoming growth of new roots —
perhaps, even stronger than before.

My soil feels bare
without her entangled roots,
but something else will grow there —
Something that knows how to live
in this changed soil. taken in Denver Botanic Gardens by @mxmelmason

27 years ago, after an elementary school assembly, I decided I wanted to play violin. I was given a rental from school and told not to open it until our first lesson — so naturally, I opened it as soon as I got home and played Mary had a little lamb. This was my first instrument from The Music Shop, but it was just the beginning of my journey with them. When it was time for me to upgrade to a better instrument, my teacher went with my mom to pick out the perfect violin for me. I remember one of my first trips to the shop was to pick out a bow — the shop was just a small house with a single studio and small showroom at the time and I picked a Gold bow to go with my shiny new violin. I watched as the shop grew and grew over the years as did my skills as a musician — I picked up new instruments whenever I could, played in Area Bands, Region I Orchestra, and graduated college with a BA in Music. The shop eventually moved next door into a much bigger space, complete with many more instruments, studios, and ensemble rooms and although I never took private lessons, I enjoyed being a part of the ensembles and acquiring MANYYY instruments — I’ve always considered TMS a home away from home.

I’ve been a hired musician now for 20 years and a teacher with the Music Shop for a decade. Throughout my transition, the loss of my father, COVID, PA school, and many more moments in the past decade, the Music Shop has been my oasis in the desert. Today, I graduated my last student who has been with me since 4th grade and is heading off to college in the fall. Although this marks the end of an era, I look forward to returning next year and will always be grateful for what this place has given me over the past 27 years. taken in The Music Shop by @mxmelmason

If you asked me 2 years ago whether I believed I would make it to this point, the answer would have been no. The journey to this point… to this coat… has been filled with a LOTTTT of challenges and a few failures, but it has also included tremendous opportunities for personal growth and the unwavering support of my friends and family. Thank you to every single person who keeps showing up for me day after day, year after year, encouraging me to keep going and standing by my side as I do, both inside and outside of the classroom. Thanks to everyone that cheered me on as I walked across that stage and to those that were able to celebrate with me after — I truly love and appreciate you all ❤️ taken in Seton Hall IHS Campus Interprofessional Health Sciences by @mxmelmason
