Tune your room with a calibrated mic. Calibrate your mic with an accurate calibrator. Don't calibrate your mic with the room.

If you're using or switching to Software SPL metering then you need an accurately calibrated mic. That doesn't happen by running white noise and comparing it to the level on your handheld meter and then calibrating your software to that.

Your room's response and the eq of your white noise playing in that room does not actually represent the frequency curve of your mic. The only way to calibrate a mic to be useful for room tuneing and for SPL or RTA monitoring is through a real calibrator with accurate reference noise.

SMAART, Open Sound Meter, and MxU all use the same math/science for tuneing. Accuracy doesn't come from the software if it's one of those 3. Accuracy comes from how you calibrate your mic.

Quick tip: SPL metering is included in @mxu.app Dashboards, no need for expensive software anymore if you have MxU for your team. 😉

At 22, @spencerwgarland was handed the keys and basically told, “Let’s see what you can do.”

What followed was a crash course in leadership, people, and figuring things out before you feel ready.

The walkthrough you gave twice last Sunday is worth recording.

How to power up your booth. Where the ProPresenter files live. What to check when the livestream loses audio.

Pick one task. Record it on your phone. Show each step, including the parts that feel obvious to you. Those are often the parts a new volunteer needs most.

You can upload those videos to MxU, combine them with training from the library, and build them into your volunteer onboarding.

For a new audio volunteer, that could look like:

• Watch your booth walkthrough.
• Take Intro to Audio.
• Shadow your audio lead and practice together.

Start with one video that would make someone’s first Sunday easier. by @mxu.app

Stop guessing how loud your room is. 🔊

Here’s how we set up SPL monitoring through MxU so we can see what’s actually happening in the room and make better decisions.

Want the calibrator we use? Comment “CALIBRATE” and I’ll send you the link!

Want this at your church?

See who’s assigned which mic and monitor wireless health on a dashboard at sidestage and FOH.

Swipe for the setup in MxU.

A mic assignment changes.

The stage team knows, but the audio engineer needs the same update.

Put shared assignments on dashboards at both ends of the room so the information stays in view.

In a dashboard for the relevant service type,

choose Edit

dashboard →
Add object →
Gear →
Mic & Gear Assignments.

Add a slot for each stage position or input, such as Lead 1, BGV 1, or Pastor.

Open Select gear for a slot, then Edit default gear.

Pick its usual mic, IEM, or other items.

Defaults populate when future services load, and you can adjust the gear for an individual service.

Open the slot’s person picker, choose Edit

default people →
Add →
Position, select the Planning Center position, then Save.

MxU fills the slot from the people scheduled for that position when a future service loads.

Add Mic & Gear Assignments to another dashboard for the same service type.

When adding a slot, choose Existing and select the assignments you already created.

FOH and sidestage now share those assignments.

Keep battery, RF, and connection status beside each mic assignment.

In the display settings, enable Status, RF, and Battery.

Wireless integrations: Shure and Sennheiser.

Less asking. More knowing.

Set up the assignments, connect your schedule and wireless gear, then put the same information where your team needs it.
