“Memory Bloom, 2026”

A projection sculpture inspired by the blossoms of Spring and the archival of memories that represents the bright and youth of life. With this year being my first away from my family for an extra long time, it personally brought a lot of thoughts and reflections. With the seasons of Spring, it also brought a lot of my childhood specific memories and nostalgia back. Although it is something that I long for now since our childhood ended abruptly with our family issues, it was those bittersweet moments I look back on.

This projection sculpture is made with origami of paper flowers, with butterfly cutouts glued onto a data sculpture that I made previously with acrylic boards. The sculpture is then laid against the corner of a wall in front of a fabric draping, to bring out a more flower blossom and spreading effect. As for the visuals for the projection map, it is a collection of our old childhood videos, edited into one with the original audios kept with Final Cut Pro. The video is then imported into TouchDesigner, disorienting the clear visuals and making it more blurry with particles forming around. Finally, the visual is then projection mapped onto the flowers, while white light is projection mapped onto the butterflies to bring more life.

“The Living Canvas, 2026”

An interactive installation with AI and TouchDesigner that detects participants and allows AI to generate and transform the participant into a different age or timeline. Inspired by how paintings and portraits are usually captured in a fixed time, this piece diverts from the fixed aspects and does the opposite. The camera detects the participant, then TouchDesigner and StreamDiffusion AI generates and turns the viewer into an impressionist portrait painting of them from being a young child, a teenager, a young adult, a middle-aged person, and elderly every few seconds.

Going back to the concept, the idea of an age-shifting canvas was inspired by the general notion of paintings, and how they are usually captured in one certain timeframe. As time passes by, so do we. Hence, this piece creates somewhat of an illusion of ourselves, allowing viewers to see a glimpse of their past, present and future. How the change of time affects the change in us.

“Chinese Dance Props and Shoes (Collections)” (2022)

The items in my repeated pattern to show the history of my time in Chinese dance. The white gymnastic shoes were used during a performance back in primary school, the leather ballet shoes were still used during the making of this piece in our dance practices, the headpiece was used in the performances back in 2015, and the fan was used in the other dance performances back in 2017.

This assemblage of items shows the history, timeline and hard-work of my time and journey in Chinese dance. The dance shoes symbolizes the hard-work and dedication I’ve put myself through throughout my years of Chinese Dance. The performance props and headpieces depicts the completed dance performances that we have done in the Chinese dance team, as well as the different dance numbers we have done through the different years and ages.

“Roy, Decay, Entropy: Rotten Slices” (2022)

This was an experiment of overlapping collagraph prints. Inspired by the artist’s technique, Jean Littlejohn, I’ve incorporated a range of sewing and stitching techniques, as well as the use of different colored yarn to match the outlines and the rotten areas of the lemon slices.

“Rot, Decay, Entropy: Rotten Lemons and Apple Slices” (2022)

Media: etching print on sketching paper with colored pencils

Size: 210x220mm

This piece was inspired by the artist, Fiona Watson. To create the repetition, I’ve used 3 rotten slices of lemon and drawn both sides of the lemon to create the sense of repetition. Same goes for the apple slices as I’ve only used 1 apple slice and drawn on 3 different sides of the apple to show the decay and rot of the fruit.

This piece is not about showing the ugly and disgusting side of rotten fruits, but is to show the beautiful side of the textures and views of rotten, entropy and decaying objects.
