Slow mornings in the Catskills as we settle into November. 🍂🪵

Gathering firewood, making a warm breakfast, and preparing our little mountain home for the colder days ahead. Six months pregnant, living in my favorite @upstate.newyorker hoodie, and finding so much joy in these simple, ordinary moments.

An extremely specific collection of things that make perfect sense to me. I will not be elaborating. 🍂

Somewhere between autumn and winter, when the trees grow bare, the days grow quiet, and home becomes the loveliest place to be. 🕯️🍂

Here’s to slow mornings, candlelit evenings, something warm in the oven, and finding a little magic in the darker days.

🍂 Samhain Soul Cakes 🕯️

A little autumn baking inspired by the centuries-old tradition of souling, when people went door to door offering prayers for the dead in exchange for small cakes.

Ingredients:

* 2⅓ cups all-purpose flour
* ½ cup + 1 tbsp cold salted butter, cubed
* ¼ cup granulated sugar
* ¼ cup packed brown sugar
* 2 egg yolks
* 2–3 tbsp whole milk
* 2½ tsp pumpkin pie spice
* ⅓ cup dried sour cherries, chopped
* ¼ cup chopped walnuts
* 3 chopped dates

Instructions:

1. Preheat oven to 375°F.
2. Combine flour and pumpkin pie spice in a large bowl.
3. Rub the cold butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs.
4. Stir in both sugars, dried cherries, walnuts, and dates.
5. Add egg yolks and 2 tablespoons of milk. Mix until a dough forms, adding another tablespoon of milk if needed.
6. Chill dough for 30 minutes.
7. Roll out to about ⅓-inch thick and cut into rounds. Lightly score a cross into the tops.
8. Bake for 16–20 minutes, until lightly golden. Cool before serving.

Makes approximately 20 soul cakes.

A little sweetness for the living, and a little remembrance for the dead. 🕯️

As the Wheel of the Year turns, we arrive at Samhain. 🍂🕯️

The final harvest. The end of the lighter half of the year. A time when the veil between worlds is said to grow thin, and the earth begins her long winter rest.

Rooted in ancient Celtic traditions, Samhain invites us to honor our ancestors, reflect on what has passed, and make peace with the things we are ready to leave behind.

There is something beautiful about this time of year. The bare branches, the fading light, the quiet reminder that endings are just as natural as beginnings.

May this season bring you rest, reflection, and a little everyday magic. 🖤

Blessed Samhain 🌙

I fear it’s past peak season now and the leaves are all turning brown and falling off. Clinging to every last bit of Autumn before the chill sets in over the mountains. 🤎🍂 by @my_catskill_table

October moments 🍂🤎 by @my_catskill_table

Autumn mornings in the Catskill Mountains 🍂🧺☕️

Slow starts, crisp mountain air, golden leaves, and the kind of quiet that makes you wish October could last forever.

A little reminder to romanticize the season while it’s here. 🍁🤎
