ARK Architecture Studio (@arkarchitecturestudio), founded by architects Malavika Mahesh (@myaalus) and Rahul Kumar (@thearchitectrahul), approaches design through experimentation, craft and a strong sense of context. Working across residential, commercial, hospitality, landscape and interiors, the Thiruvananthapuram- and Bengaluru-based practice believes in creating spaces with an identity of their own.

In this conversation, the duo reflects on everything from the forgotten potential of the traditional veranda and the influence of cinema to lessons from local craftspeople and their fascination with traditional brutalism. They also share why allowing materials to weather, embracing irregularity and choosing what not to design can give architecture greater depth and longevity.

Today's Feature

Antara Residence Reimagines Kerala’s Architectural Wisdom | @arkarchitecturestudio

Editorial Note : "Rooted in Kerala’s climatic wisdom yet expressed through a distinctly contemporary vocabulary, this residence explores architecture as an unfolding experience. Sloping planes converge to form a sculptural heart, while shaded thresholds and permeable screens dissolve the boundaries between dwelling and landscape. Passive strategies shape comfort, allowing the tropical climate to become part of the home’s character. Through measured transitions and luminous volumes, the residence transforms vernacular intelligence into a refined, introspective architecture."

Founded in 2018, ARK Architecture Studio (@arkarchitecturestudio) is an architecture and interiors practice based in Trivandrum and Bengaluru. Led by Malavika Mahesh (@myaalus) and Rahul Kumar (@thearchitectrahul), the studio is driven by their shared interest in creating meaningful spaces and experiences. Their work moves beyond passing trends, with an emphasis on longevity, identity, and a strong sense of place. Here, Malavika and Rahul share how fabrics, finishes, surfaces, and textures shape the sensory experience of a bedroom, along with the brands they keep returning to.

“For us, comfort always begins with the mattress, which is why we always turn to Duroflex and Peps for their comfiest options. We then bring in curtains from D’Decor and rugs from Fabindia and Jaipur Rugs to complete the space. It’s easy to admire a bedroom from afar, but it’s these details that encourage you to stay a little longer,” say Malavika and Rahul.
