Before audiences heard the first note of his kora, Jabel Kanuteh had already crossed a journey many can hardly imagine. Like countless Africans seeking safety, dignity or opportunity, he faced the brutal reality of migration routes where hope often walks beside fear. The road to Europe is rarely a simple departure: it can mean separation from family, uncertainty, exploitation, borders that close without warning, and the constant risk of disappearing between one shore and the next.

Jabel chose the Backway — the dangerous path taken by many West Africans across desert and sea. Some never arrive. Some arrive carrying invisible scars. Survival itself becomes an act of strength.

And yet, what reaches Europe is too often described only through politics or statistics. People forget what migrants also carry: knowledge, artistry, memory, discipline and culture. Jabel arrived with all of this inside him.

Born into a griot family in eastern Gambia, he inherited the kora tradition from his elders. In his hands, music becomes testimony: of ancestry, endurance and human connection. Every performance reminds us that migration is not only about borders crossed, but worlds brought with it.

Soon in Switzerland with KAIRASILA, alongside Patrizia Caviezel, Mamah Diabaté, Moumouni Dao and Bifalo Kouyateh.

È stato uno degli eventi più belli della mia vita. Mi sono sentito a casa e ho sentito ogni emozione come viva e pura. Ho mangiato pere, mele, prugne direttamente dagli alberi e mi sembrava assurdo il loro sapore. Non siamo più abituati a vedere un albero di mele.

Thikra: Night of Remembering •
We have already spoken about Thikra, the latest production by the Akram Khan Company.

And yet, the words could truly be endless.

How could I not speak about this moment?

This dance.
This choreography.
A scene that felt both intimate and ancestral.
—a gathering of women moving together, carrying memory through their bodies.—

The word “Thikra” comes from Arabic and means memory, remembrance, commemoration.

"A circle of women moving together in silence and shadow.
Their bodies speaking an ancient language.
Not a dance.
A ritual.

The music was fragile, almost melancholic —
and yet filled with incredible strength.

Watching them, I felt something strangely familiar.
As if this memory lived somewhere deep in my bones.
Women holding pain, beauty, humility and power at the same time, all together.
Remembering those who came before us.
Mothers, grandmothers, forgotten voices.

Women remembering women.
Strength remembering pain.
Beauty remembering silence.

It wasn’t just a dance.
It was a gesture and movement. Something sacred… deep and profound.
In that moment — remembrance.

Last night at LAC Lugano I witnessed something that felt ancestral.
Akram Khan Company – Thikra.
“Thikra” means fragments. Shards. Broken pieces.
And yet, on stage, those fragments became memory, identity, migration, belonging.
The language of the body spoke of exile and return.
Of roots that survive distance.
Of histories carried in the bones.
There was something deeply familiar in that rhythm — something that touched my own origins in Bangladesh, my Baul heritage, that mystical thread where dance, music and spirituality become one breath.
Akram Khan doesn’t just choreograph movement.
He excavates memory.
He gives dignity to what has been scattered.
And maybe we are all made of fragments —
but when they move together, they become poetry.

Grateful to have experienced this.

At first, I approached his work with a mix of hesitation and curiosity, not quite knowing what to expect. What unfolds in front of you is an intensity that can sometimes feel unsettling, yet always deeply authentic and strangely liberating.

Myrgon has the rare ability to descend into his deepest shadows and transform them into art — raw, visceral, yet touched by moments of indescribable grace. He brings pain to the surface, turns it into beauty, and shares it with a truth that reaches directly to the soul.
