i wanna take a moment to thank 14 year old mya. she had just torn her acl and meniscus and had no idea that her entire life was about to change. she fought her hardest for 7 months just to learn she had re-torn it. she elected to start over. the only thing pushing her forward was the overwhelming burning desire to play soccer again. but she hated it. she hated every moment. every second of every day she hated it. she had to fight just to get through the day. she contemplated even trying. there were times so dark she didn’t even want to be here anymore. but somehow she got through each day, one at a time. her physical therapist showed up for her too, though she barely gave him anything to work with.

she went on to commit to a full ride D1 soccer scholarship her junior year, before she tore it once again. everyone told her to quit, and stop putting herself through all this pain. but she knew if she wanted to break generational cycles of abuse, poverty and uneducated, she had to go. she would hate herself if she gave up now. so she came back again. this time not just for herself, but for her family, for her ancestors who came here for a better life, and for her future patients. because by then she had already decided she wanted to become a physical therapist herself, and hopefully change the lives of future athletes.

as i am now officially a graduate and have passed my board exam, i write this love letter to my 14 year old self, because she proved to me i can do anything i put my mind to. which is unfortunate for anyone or anything that stands in my way ❤️‍🔥

p.s. ACL tears im coming for you and i won’t stop until we have defeated you 🤨 by @myalopez1024
