Sharing—well: showing off, really—my collection of original comic art and commissions—and stories to go along with them.
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Back before COVID shut everything, Dave Lapham, creator of the classic Stray Bullets, made a bunch of pages available for the first time, and I bought a couple of them—including my very favorite page from the entire run—which I’ll share at another time (building anticipation…). Around that same time, I commissioned a sketch of the great Spanish Scott. Lapham killed it! #originalart #comicbooks #sketch #comicart by @myartcide

So when Space Riders lowkey rode into my space, I was highkey high on the art by the spacey @aziritt. I tracked the OA from the series on his dealer’s site and bookmarked a few pages; but I kept gravitating toward this, an unused cover for Billionaire Killers. It’s a fun piece that just pops—a poppy pinup that oozes Ziritt. Love it! #originalart #comicbookart #pinup #lollipop by @myartcide

If you read @terrymooreart ‘s Motor Girl, then you know what this page means.

Bought it from Mr. & Mrs. Moore at NYCC 2017.

Had a nice conversation with Terry about the page and the series. Robyn told us she was sad to see it go.

Yeah: it’s one of those pages.

I bought this off of eBay quite some time ago. An apocalyptically keen eye would note it’s from The Walking Dead—you know, with the Rick and the Michonne and the feelings amidst all the walking and the dead and the walking dead. This is issue # 62 p. 20 with awesome autos from @charlie_adlard and @robkirkman. Quite the selling point! My wife and I still long for a TV show like TWD: not counting our kids, it was probably our longest-running shared experience that sat us down together, that had us share our thoughts and feelings, that had us looking forward to something with great excitement—for the show, I’m sure; but also for the sitting and the sharing and the looking forward. I liked the comic a lot, too. 😀 #thewalkingdead #comicbookart #originalart #comicbookpage by @myartcide

Back in 2013, @aleskotsays and a cadre of killer artists gave us Zero, a 💯 series that made Kot a must-read writer. The first issue set the tone for what was a wild trip (loved the Burroughs stuff!)—and that was, in part, thanks to the pulse-pounding, heartrending, the absolutely masterful storytelling of artist @mister_walsh, from whom I bought this page at NY Comic Con 2014. He’s certainly gone on to do some awesome things (The Silver Coin, Exquisite Corpses, etc. Jonah Hex coming up next!). This page makes me feel like “I was there when…” #originalart #comicbookart #zero #michaelwalsh by @myartcide

An eBay find! Back in 2014, I won this awesome Cyclops sketch directly from @chrisbachalo . I love his style; and I actually loved this design for Cyclops, as well, which is why—as always—I bid to win! Funny enough, I’ve always loved Cyclops as a character, even before I lost an eye and earned the moniker for myself! He’s a terrific leader, flawed for sure; but I’d follow him just as soon as I’d follow Cap. #cyclops #xmen #comicbooksketch #originalart #superhero by @myartcide

Wow! The new Spider-Man movie is smashing it—amazing! Let’s celebrate with my only OA with Spider-Man on it! Here’s a page from @ryanstegman and @jpmayer_ (swipe for Stegman’s pencils): Absolute Carnage #1 p. 27. Look at the emotion on Spidey’s face! Again: amazing. And as with several of my pieces: scored it during one of @felixcomicart ‘s classic high-stress OA drops. Thanks, Felix! #originalart #comicbookart #spiderman #carnage by @myartcide

Sticking with Daredevil: at NY Comic Con in 2017, I went to the table of @felixcomicart ‘s stable of artists and hoped to get a sketch—and boy did I get one: my beloved Daredevil by @rileyrossmo. Love the Band-Aids over one of his eyes; love the spiral background; love the ziptone. It’s so Riley! #originalart #comicbooksketch #daredevil #comiccon by @myartcide

In 2014, I went back to NY Comic Con with more experience in my portfolio. I decided to step into the sketch/commission space. I loved The Massive by Brian Wood, and I particularly liked @garrybrownart ‘s art on the series; so when I saw Garry, I decided to ask him for a sketch of one of my favorites: Daredevil. This is what he came up with—a very cool piece. #originalart #comicbooksketch #daredevil #pencilandink by @myartcide

A key page from the first issue of Six-Gun Gorilla, a terrific six-issue mini-series from @boom_studios.

Bought it from @jeffstokely at NYCC 2013. As soon as I saw it in his portfolio, I knew I just had to have it. Thing was, Jeff wasn’t accepting credit cards, and I certainly didn’t have the cash on me. (And I had already purchased a page from Matt Kindt—Mind MGMT #14 p. 9–so how in the world was I going to explain this to my wife?) I promisedpromisedpromised that I’d be right back and raced like I was avoiding gunfire to the ATMs. There were several terminals, but only one was working—and the line was ridiculous! Once I finally got to the machine—about a half an hour later—turned out there was a max withdrawal per transaction; so I had to do two, which didn’t add to my atomic impatience at all. (And wouldn’t you know: I’d find out later that my bank blocked my debit card because the transactions looked suspicious, especially since they appeared to have been made in, of all places, Arizona!) I trekked back to Jeff’s table, dodging cosplayers and fanboys along the way, and, as promised, purchased the piece. He told me that this was the first page he drew for the series—that this was what he ran by @sispurrier before working in earnest on the rest of the book. He also threw in a free print just because!

What a guy!

Fast forward a lot of years—a lot of OA-free years. Around 2012 or so, I started a reasonably successful comic book-related blog called Images and Nerds. My partner and I decided it’d be a good idea to rub elbows, press the flesh, and whatnot; so we went to NYCC 2013. It was a lot of fun meeting the folks we were reading and writing about. One creator I was particularly smitten with was @matt.kindt.for.real. His Revolver got me back into comics; and I absolutely LOVED Mind MGMT. Of course I went to Matt’s table, said a few silly things (I get tongue-tied around creatives I admire), and browsed through his pile of OA. There were covers from upcoming issues and plenty of pages, but I kept coming back to this page—a standout from issue 14. I ended up buying it. Matt told me that—at the time—this page took him the most time to complete because of the insane amount of detail. Definitely zoom in to see the detail; it’s truly amazing. This was the first of many Kindt pieces that I’ve purchased through the years. Follow me to see all of the other stuff—and Morazzo. (That’s right: I’ve got a lot of pieces from @martinmorazzo as well!) #originalart #comicbookart #mindmgmt #mattkindt by @myartcide

Here’s the first comic book page that I bought. It’s pure—and purely gorgeous—pencil work from the singular @rebecca_leveille_guay! I happened to love Black Orchid and was reading the Vertigo series circa ‘94 or so. I was taken by this beautiful page in issue 7, which was colored in soft pastels—as requested or as demanded by Rebecca Guay as per the note in the margin of the OA—and was so intricately detailed. Similar to how I happened upon the cover from Adventures of Superman, I saw an ad in CBG, saw the listing (without an image, if I remember correctly), and checked my comic. I couldn’t believe that THAT exact page was available for me to own!!! Still calling on my memory: interestingly enough, I think I got this one from @sdunbier as well. And sure, I know you can pinch the pic to get a better look; but I’ve included a few close-ups, so all you have to do is swipe—and I recommend that you do! #originalart #comicbookart #blackorchid #rebeccaguay #pencilart by @myartcide
