Donor Network West had the privilege of speaking with Radio Reporter and Hall of Fame Inductee, Holly Quan, on the upcoming Dia De Los Muertos Celebrations taking place at the Oakland Dia De Los Muertos Festival on Sunday, November 1st at the Fruitvale Village. Our Community Engagement Specialist, Lanica Garcia, had the opportunity to share the importance of Dia De Los Muertos to the hispanic community, and how honoring our loved ones who have passed can go hand-in-hand with honoring their wishes to be an organ, eye and tissue donor, and how far that legacy can go. Some people give in ways that stay with us. Dr. Charles “Chuck” Rickert has done it twice. 💚 In 2008, while still in medical school, he heard a radio discussion about organ donation. That conversation led him to donate a kidney to a complete stranger and helped inspire his career as a transplant surgeon at the University of California, San Francisco. After helping hundreds of patients through transplant surgery, he chose to give again. This time, he donated part of his liver to another stranger. “My life has been so enriched by others,” he told NBC Bay Area. His wish is to pass that generosity along. For patients waiting for a transplant and the families who love them, stories like his offer something precious: hope. Behind every living donation is a person choosing to help someone have more time, more possibilities, and more life to share. What an extraordinary gift. 🔹Source: NBC Bay Area, reporting by Garvin Thomas, “UCSF surgeon has spent his career transplanting organs. He’s also donated two.” #DonateLife #DonorNetworkWest #UCSF #NBCBayArea by @mydnwest

The news became more devastating. Mary had triple negative breast cancer--the most aggressive type of breast cancer-- affecting mostly young, pre-menopausal minority women. Traditional treatments for this type of breast cancer are not effective. After visiting with an oncologist, Mary immediately began chemotherapy and subsequently chose to have bilateral mastectomy to avoid the possibility of cancer affecting the other breast. A few months later, she scheduled breast reconstruction surgery and decided to use donated skin graft for the procedure. Mary had learned from a cousin that using donated skin grafts was an option to improve the outcome of reconstruction and she believes her surgical results are excellent. Gratitude is a word that comes to mind often to Mary. She's grateful for her new perspective on life, family, friends, and her donor gift that enabled Mary to feel whole again. "I've always been a donor. I registered a long time ago but feel honored to be part of the receiving end of this cycle of giving. I've always been a giver, but this has awakened me to a whole new level of gratitude for the generosity of such a gift". Today Mary enjoys running again, spending vacations at her countryside him in France, and speaking to small groups about her cancer journey. National Breast Reconstruction Awareness (BRA) Day is dedicated to education, awareness, and access to information about post-mastectomy breast reconstruction. Every breast cancer survivor’s journey is unique, and BRA Day serves as a reminder that no one has to face it alone. Too often, women are not fully informed about their reconstruction options and studies show fewer than one in four receive the necessary information at the time of mastectomy. BRA Day seeks to change that by ensuring women know their choices and can make decisions that support healing and quality of life. Learn more about the importance of BRA Day, how tissue donation lead to BRAve Stories of Hope, and stay tuned all day as we share those stories of hope with you: Click our Profile Link titled, BRA Day! #BRADay #BreastCancerAwareness #BreastReconstructionAwarenessDay #DonorNetworkWest by @mydnwest
Congratulations @jpabloinc and his amazing wife and donor hero, @AliWGarciaPablo on their 10 Year Kidney-versary recently ❤️ 10 YEARS. ONE INCREDIBLE GIFT. A LIFETIME OF GRATITUDE. ❤️ Today marks 10 years since my kidney transplant, and I owe so much of this second chance at life to my amazing wife @aliwgarciapablo, who literally gave me a part of herself. ❤️ Because of her selfless gift, I’ve been able to chase dreams, compete in the Transplant Games of America and World Transplant Games, win medals, and make memories I’ll cherish forever. 🏅 Sweetie, you didn’t just give me a kidney...you gave me more LIFE!!! And somehow, your kidney turned me into an athlete, again!!! 😂 Guess you really did give me the winning part of yourself! 🏆🤣 Jokes aside, I’m forever grateful for your love, sacrifice, and the extra years we’ve been blessed to share. I never take this gift for granted. 10 years later, your kidney is still working hard, and I’m still taking all the credit! 😂❤️ God’s plan is always better than anything we could ever imagine. I’m still here, making memories, chasing dreams, and thanking Him for the blessing of serving. I love you, Sweetie. One gift. Two miracles. A lifetime of memories. Two years ago, Roberto received a lifesaving kidney transplant from a hero organ donor, giving him a second chance at life. But the miracle did not stop there. Roberto and his wife, Jessica, had accepted that they would not have any more children because of his chronic medical condition. Then, one year after his transplant, they received unexpected news: they were expecting another baby boy. Today, their family is filled with love, with 8-year-old Leo and 10-month-old Lucas by their side. Roberto’s story is a powerful reminder that one person’s decision to donate can change countless lives and create moments that families never thought possible.
