🌿 Building my dream balcony garden
🌸 Flowers • 🌱 Plants • 🍅 Homegrown food
✨ Building a little piece of paradise, one day at a time.
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
It all begins with a dream.
And this is mine: a little (or big, if I’m lucky) balcony garden. 🌿
I don’t know where.
I don’t know when.
And I don’t know how yet.
But I’m dreaming.
And somehow, this dream is slowly turning into a life decision.
Until it becomes a certainty, all I can do is prepare, learn, imagine… and dream a little more.
I want to learn about plants, flowers, herbs and vegetables. About what grows where, what thrives in a balcony garden, and how to turn a simple space into a little piece of paradise — one that is beautiful, alive, and maybe even gives something back. 🍅🌸
So this is Day 0.
The garden is still only in my imagination. But the journey starts here.
If you’re thinking about starting your own balcony garden, dreaming about a garden of your own, or you simply love nature, I’d love for you to join me. 🌿
Let’s learn, grow and create something beautiful together.

Garden Research #14 🌸 Bougainvillea
Because I see it everyday everywhere: on the side of the road when driving to work, on the promenades across the city, in every balcony that has plants, and in every park across the country.
I love the variety of colours and most of all its resilience.
So, naturally, I ended up researching the soil, watering, growing habits and fertiliser too. And I discovered a little surprise, of course: those colourful “flowers”? Not flowers. Bracts. Modified leaves. A little botanical plot twist.
Still on my future balcony wish list… subject to sunshine, space and winter plans.
First, find the balcony. Then negotiate with the plants. 🌿 by @mygardenmysanity

Grocery shopping? Sure! But let me quickly say "hello" to my new "friends" first! ❤️

Apparently, “green and pretty” isn’t the whole description. 😄
I am learning how to distinguish different categories of plants by different kinds of grouping. One surprise was that many plants can overlap in several categories. So down we go the rabbit hole again. 😂
One plant, several labels. I’m learning what they mean before choosing plants for my future balcony. 🌱

Fun post alert! 🌿✨ Since it's the week-end 😉
If zodiac signs were plants…
As a Virgo, I got rosemary. Apparently, even my plant personality has a gardening spreadsheet. Honestly… fair 😅♍
What’s your sign? Does your plant fit, or are you filing a complaint? 😂
Just for fun, of course 🌸

Since I decided to focus on having my own garden, my routine seems to change without even noticing. So a day at a mall, with a clear intention of shopping, turned into a plant observations day. Since nature here entertwines beautifully in all life aspects, even malls are interesting places of learning for me. So I ended up with a nice collections of photos, a whole bunch of new dilemmas about plants and new ideas for my future garden. And the best part: I didn't even miss the shopping part. 😊

Garden research #12 🌱 COMPOST
I knew compost was supposed to be good for plants.
What I didn’t know was how many times “yes, but…” were about to follow that statement. 😄
Yes, compost can add nutrients, improve the growing medium and support plant roots health.
But… it isn’t soil.
It isn’t potting mix.
It isn’t exactly fertilizer either.
And apparently filling a pot with as much compost as possible is not the shortcut to spectacular plants. Noted. 😂
Another reminder that gardening seems to be less about finding the “best” ingredient and more about learning how everything works together.
Right plant. Right mix. Right amount.
One more tiny piece of my future garden figured out. 🌿

Strawberries 🍓🍓🍓
An all time everybody's favourite; sounds perfect and simple for a beginner gardener until.....I start asking questions. 😄
Which type? How much sun? Can they really be happy in containers? What happens when it gets too hot? And apparently those innocent-looking little runners have plans of their own. 🌱
So this research comes with something new: the Plant Passport.
From now on, every plant I research gets the same little background check — climate, soil, water, lifecycle, sunlight, toxicity, size and growing habit — before I decide whether it belongs on my future-garden list.
As for strawberries?
Still very much on the list. 🍓❤️
One day, hopefully, I’ll be picking them from my own balcony.
My garden doesn’t exist yet. The research definitely does.

Week-end is coming so good vibes and good energy is needed. And the right place to get it is in nature, of course. But since is still too hot outside for walks, I do the next best thing: visit the local garden shop ❤️. by @mygardenmysanity

Of course, climate had to be on my reasearch list. Because I would really like to have an olive tree or a lemon tree but...I might not be able to grow one, depending on the type of climate my garden will be in 🌍🌱
So... this research is not going to be simple either. 😅
Heat, rainfall, humidity, growing season, winter cold — they all shape what can thrive or not in a garden. And the same plant can have a very different experience depending on where in the world it is growing.
So this is my starting point: a simplified look at the world’s main climate families, what makes each one different, and some of the opportunities and challenges they bring for gardeners.
But this needs to be explored further. Because there is sooo much more I need to learn about: hardiness zones, heat zones, microclimates, growing seasons, and eventually how all of this translates into choosing the right plants. 📝
One layer at a time. Apparently climate deserves more than one page in my garden notebook. 😏

Garden Research #8: Soil 🌱
Another day, another research.
But this time I knew this one it's not going to be easy.
Choosing what your plants grow in deserves almost as much thought as choosing the plants themselves.
Potting mix is a little world of its own — drainage, aeration, moisture retention, nutrients, different ingredients and, of course, different plants wanting different things.🪴
But I think my biggest takeaway is actually quite simple: there is no perfect mix for every plant.
So instead of trying to remember one magic recipe, I’m adding a new rule to my future-gardener notebook:
🌱 Know the plant first. Choose the mix second.
Another little piece of the garden puzzle understood.
One day at a time. 💚

Malls aren't exactly my favourite places.
Especially because, for the past decade or so, I feel like I've practically been living in them. 😂
But this particular one is an exception.
Because it hides a little secret…
a rooftop garden. 😍🌿
Every time I visit, I check on the garden too.
But now, since deciding that one day I want a garden of my own, this place has become one of my favourite spots — both for shopping and for learning.
I look at the plants differently now. I notice what grows in the sun. What survives the heat. What thrives in the shade. How plants are combined. How a little bit of green can completely transform a place.
And I keep coming back to the same conclusion:
Nature and its beauty are everywhere.
You just have to stop and look.
Really look. ❤️🌿 by @mygardenmysanity
