Had a great time at the @southernsmokefoundation Festival this past weekend!

Great food, great people, and an even better cause. Southern Smoke Foundation continues to do incredible work supporting people in the food and beverage industry when they need it most.

Found (well, didn’t find). More like stumbled across this restaurant called Ballato.

We initially went to meet some coworkers who, when we texted them, said, “We’ll just meet you wherever you are.” Which now I know why…

Ballato doesn’t take reservations, and if you aren’t there early or know somebody, you might not get a table.

We are bar sitters. We will order a 5 star meal sitting at the bar and spend the night talking to the bartenders. Only one problem… Ballato doesn’t have a bar.

So we’re standing there figuring out our next move when this guy approaches us and says, “Are y’all looking for a drink?”

I definitely agreed.

He must have seen the Texas in us because he says, “I have a speakeasy around the corner.”

So naturally, we follow this complete stranger around the corner.

He gives us ONE rule:

“No fucking pictures, please.”

Fair enough.

We go in, order a drink… then another drink… you know how this goes.

Next thing you know, the bartender tells us he was able to snag us a table back at Ballato.

And let me tell you… THE FOOD WAS PHENOMENAL. 10/10.

Long story short, somehow we ended up right back at the speakeasy after dinner. 😂

Come to find out, the spot is called Da Milio, it’s private, and the random guy who decided these Texans needed a drink was the owner Emilio.

And just to be clear, none of these pictures are mine. We didn’t pull our phones out all night. Not at dinner. Not at the speakeasy. Nothing.

And honestly, that tells you everything you need to know about the place. It makes you want to put your phone away, enjoy your company, talk to the people around you and just enjoy the night.

Now I know you probably don’t want the recognition, but @emiliovitolo , you are a class act, my man. You took a couple of strangers and gave us one of those random New York nights with legit good people.

Really looking forward to our next NYC trip because I’m coming back for that bone in veal parm.

And if you’re ever in Houston, dinner is on us. We aren’t just saying that either🤘🏼 #EmiliosBallato #nyceats by @mygreedymonster
