Mino are traditional straw capes made from rice straw (稲藁), woven as an outer layer to shed rain and snow. In heavy-snow regions like @joetsumyoko & @akakura_onsen , they were essential winter workwear - worn over the shoulders while farming, hauling loads, or walking through deep snow, often paired with a straw hat (笠) and straw snow boots (藁沓).

They were entirely homemade: with rice farming central to the region, families spun their own straw into rope, sandals, hats, and capes during the snowbound winter months when fieldwork stopped. Straw was ideal for the job - breathable, insulating, and naturally water-shedding.

Today, few people still know how to weave them, and mino have become more of a folk-craft curiosity than daily wear - sometimes seen in museums, festivals, or demonstrations rather than actual use.

Golden days in Joetsu and Myoko 🌾 The koshihikari rice fields are heavy with grain and just about ready for harvest. This is the rice chefs across Japan seek out by name, and the same grains that go into some of the region's finest sake. A quiet kind of beauty before the harvest begins.

Koshihikari is arguably Japan's most celebrated rice variety. What makes Joetsu/Myoko's rice special? Mineral-rich snowmelt water flowing down from the mountains, fertile soil, and big swings between warm days and cool nights, which pushes the rice to store more starch and develop that signature sweetness and stickiness. It's the rice top chefs seek out by name, and the backbone of many premium sake from this region. Harvest is right around the corner. They'll be some on your plate this winter!🌾⛰️

Before it was "Umigatari" this was Joetsu Aquarium in Naoetsu - a beloved stop for beachgoers and tourists. 🌊 These vintage photos from the Showa Era show the horseshoe tank hall, the resident fur seals, and the seaside pool out front. Wonder how many people visited straight from a day at the beach, sand still on their feet?

The modern "Umigatari" (うみがたり) reopened in 2018 and now holds around 300 species and 45,000 specimens, including the world's largest population of captive-bred Magellanic penguins.

Umigatari is now also a popular spot for visiting foreign tourists and can be reached by taxi or bus from Naoetsu Station - about 40 minutes by train from Myoko Kogen.

Kyushidancho Kansha in Takada, Joetsu City

The former Division Commander's Residence was built in 1910 as the residence of Lieutenant General Gaishi Nagaoka, the 3rd commander of the former Imperial Japanese Army's Takada 13th Division. It is one of the few remaining Meiji-era wooden buildings in the city that blends Japanese and Western architectural styles.

Until 1991 it was used as officer quarters for the Japan Self-Defense Forces' Takada Garrison, but in 1993 the city relocated and restored it to its current location to preserve this valuable Western-style building from the Meiji era. It was designated a city cultural property in
January 1994.

The restored site is the former site of the Takada Mayor's Residence, where Gaishi's predecessor, the 2nd Division Commander, resided. In 2020, renovation work was carried out, and while preserving its cultural heritage, it is also being utilised as a restaurant by a private business.

Places like this have a way of showing you something about yourself you weren’t expecting. Your limits. Your patience. What actually makes you feel alive.

That’s the thing about being in the great outdoors. It’s never really about the destination.

The only rule worth keeping: treat the place, the people, and the culture with the same respect you’d want shown to your own home.

Great news! From this month, city buses operating in the Myoko Kogen area of Myoko City have made it possible to pay fares cashless using credit cards via "credit card touch" (a method of contactless payment). The routes covered are three city bus routes operating in the Myoko Kogen area - to Akakura, Ikenotaira/Suginohara, as well as the green season Myoko Sanroku Line.

Myoko is beginning to exhale. The roofs are shedding their heavy layers, and the rhythm of the village is slowly finding its spring beat.

Winter 2026 was a wild one, full of new friends, returning legends, and enough snow to bury a phone booth. It’s these small, shared moments in the cold that make the season feel so warm.
