New parents aren’t unreachable. Their free time moved.

The first year with a baby can be one of the loneliest stretches of adult life, and it’s often not the parents pulling away. It’s everyone else, kindly, stepping back.

“They’ve got so much on.” “I don’t want to bother them.”

Meanwhile the parent is sitting in a dark room at 2pm with a sleeping baby, forty minutes of quiet, wishing someone would call.

The free time is still there. It just comes in short, unpredictable pieces that can’t be scheduled.

Baby’s asleep? Flip to Open. Say so 🍼

And if you have a friend with a new baby: catch them in the nap window.

New city. Nobody to call on a Tuesday.

You’ve met people: the climbing-gym person, the colleague from that one great lunch, the neighbour. Every meeting ended with “we should do this again!”

And almost none of them happened again.

It’s not that anyone was insincere. The second invite is just a different kind of act. The first is easy. The second says “I’d like this to be a friendship”, and that feels exposed. So you wait for them, and they wait for you.

New friends aren’t made on the first meeting. They’re made on the second invite.

When you can see they’re Open right now, asking twice just feels like asking 🏙️

One of you is always free. Never both. 🟢🔴

Since March. “This week?” “Next week for sure.”

Then one evening, both rings are green at the same time.

Remember knocking on a friend’s door?

“Can you come out?”

No plan. No calendar invite. Sometimes they could, sometimes they were having tea. Nobody took it personally; you’d try again tomorrow.

It worked because you could see who was home. The lights were on.

Adults lost that. Everyone’s somewhere behind a screen, and “can you come out?” has become “when works for you?”

MyOrbio is the lit window. It shows who’s around right now. You still do the knocking 🚪

Somewhere we learned that being present means making something: a photo, a story, a caption good enough to share.

The side effect is that most days are ordinary, and ordinary days don’t make content. So on most days we go quiet. We haven’t gone anywhere; we just have nothing to show.

But the people close to you never wanted the photo. They wanted to know you were around.

A status is presence with nothing to produce. “Open.” No photo, no caption, no audience. Just: I’m here.

Presence, not performance ✨

The walk home is twenty free minutes.

20 minutes a day × 5 days × 48 weeks is about 80 hours a year of time you’re already spending, with your hands free and nowhere else to be.

A lot of us fill it with a podcast.

That walk used to be when people called each other: the “just ringing to see how you are” slot.

Walking and happy to talk? Set yourself Open and let someone catch you.

When you’re running on empty, you usually get two options.

Force yourself to be “on”. Or go quiet without a word.

The trouble with the quiet is that it carries no reason. Your friend sees three unanswered messages and starts writing a story: are they upset? Did I do something?

The quiet you needed for yourself turns into worry for them.

There’s a third option. “Resting” is one of the five statuses in MyOrbio, and it says the true thing without a paragraph:

I’m here. I’m recharging. I’m not gone.

Resting isn’t ghosting. Rest is part of a friendship, not a break from it 🌙

There’s a specific trap that keeps good friendships permanently paused.

It goes like this. It’s been a while — so reaching out now feels like it needs an apology. But the apology feels awkward and heavy, so you put it off. Which makes it longer. Which makes the eventual apology even bigger.

So you put it off again.

Every week of silence quietly raises the cost of breaking it, until a friendship you’d genuinely love to have is held hostage by the dread of one slightly awkward opening line.

Here’s what dissolves it:

The other person is not keeping the tally you are. You’re counting months. They’re not counting at all.

To them, a message out of the blue isn’t “seven months of neglect, finally addressed.” It’s just you. Showing up. A small, warm surprise.

It hasn’t been too long. It’s never too long 🌙

When you think about reaching out to someone you’ve missed, notice what your mind actually pictures.

Not a quick hello.

It pictures the whole production. The long overdue call. The two-hour dinner. The full debrief on everything that’s happened since you last spoke.

That imagined event has a price tag — time, energy, coordination — and it’s so high that you quietly decline it and do nothing.

Then the guilt of the silence makes the next imagined catch-up even bigger and more overdue. So it’s even easier to skip. The debt compounds.

Here’s the release: closeness was never built in three-hour blocks. It’s built in thirty-second ones.

A voice note. A photo. “This made me think of you.”

Stop pricing every hello like a dinner party 🌙

Here’s a promise you’ve made and broken more than any other.

I’ll reach out when things calm down.

After this project. After the move. After the quarter closes, the kids settle, the renovation ends.

You’re not lying. You fully intend to. You’re just waiting for a version of your life with more room in it.

That version isn’t coming.

There is no “after.” The project ships and the next one starts. The quarter closes and reopens. “Once things settle down” is a place nobody has ever actually arrived at — because the quiet future is always one more busy period away.

So the choice was never “now” vs “when I’m free.” It’s “inside a busy life” vs “not.”

Busy is permanent. Staying close only needs fifteen seconds inside it 🌙

Every group chat has the same graveyard in it.

“We should all get together soon.” Fifteen thumbs-up.

Three “yes!!”s. A “someone make a plan.”

And then nothing. Forever.

It isn’t that nobody wants to. It’s a real, documented effect: the more people share responsibility for something, the less any single person feels it. In a group of eight, everyone assumes one of the other seven will pick a date.

All eight assume it. So no one does.

Enthusiasm in a group is warm and completely inert.

The plan needs an owner — and a group is exactly the structure that guarantees it won’t have one.

Which is why almost every plan that actually happens is one-to-one. One person. One ask. One yes 🌙
