Your dog’s happiness is your responsibility.

Not your dog’s job to “behave better.”
Not their job to figure out what you want.
Not their job to fit perfectly into your world.

It’s our responsibility to give them safety, enrichment, exercise, choice, clear communication, and a life that meets their needs.

A happy dog doesn’t just happen. We create the environment that makes it possible.

COME SUCKS.

Here’s why I say that: “Come” puts all the responsibility on the dog.

You say come. The dog doesn’t come. You get frustrated. But what did you bring to the equation? Where was your value? Where was the reinforcement? Why should your dog choose you over everything else happening in the environment?

That’s why I love TOUCH as a recall.

Touch puts responsibility back on the human. You have to show your two fingers. You have to cue touch. You have to mark the moment your dog touches your hand. And you have to reinforce it.

In other words, you have a job too.

If you want your dog to come running back to you, you need to participate in the behavior. You need to practice it. You need to reinforce it. And most importantly, you need to have value.

Recall shouldn’t be, “I said COME, so get over here.”

It should be, “Coming back to me is always worth it.”

Be responsible & own it!

The best way to make a great first impression with a dog? Pretend they don’t exist.

Ignoring a dog when you first meet them gives them the freedom to approach on their own terms. That simple choice builds confidence, lowers stress, and helps create trust from the very beginning.

The best greetings happen when the dog makes the first move.

This is Mocha and yes, she knows exactly who her favorite human is. 😂

Her mom, @jennygirlmiche recently told me that Mocha is doing great and responding beautifully to her “touch” cue…especially when Dad, @ben_schwartz__ asks. Mom may currently be the “spare human,” but she’s putting in the work with patience, consistency, and a great sense of humor.

What I loved most is what mom said: “She’s so smart I know if she doesn’t get something, it’s because we’re doing something wrong.”

That mindset is everything. Dogs aren’t stubborn, difficult, or trying to give us a hard time. When something isn’t clicking, we slow down, make it easier, communicate more clearly, and reinforce the behavior we want.

Mocha is one smart, happy girl and her humans are doing a wonderful job.

Sometimes this job absolutely breaks my heart… and other times it fills it with more joy than I can put into words.

When Enzo first walked into the studio, he was trembling. He wouldn’t come anywhere near me and kept as much distance as he could. I barely looked at him. I quietly tossed a few treats on the floor to help him feel safe, build a little confidence, and let his nervous system settle.

What happened next is exactly why I love what I do.

By the end of our session, Enzo wasn’t shaking anymore. He was happily coming over to me, confidently doing “touch,” and showing the wonderful dog that had been there all along. Watching that transformation is something I’ll never get tired of.

Enzo is one of the luckiest dogs in the world to have such incredible parents @brittanybarbs & @james_anth0ny_ who understand him and are willing to do the work. And they’re just as lucky to have such an amazing dog.

Thank you for trusting me to be part of Enzo’s journey. Moments like these remind me why I do this every single day.

How do we deal with Jersey’s herding instincts?

One of the things we do is simple: Kim walks way out in front of me, I stay behind, and Scooter is usually behind me. Jersey naturally runs back and forth between all of us, making sure everyone is together.

This is such a deeply ingrained part of who she is genetically that she can’t help herself. And honestly, giving her an appropriate outlet for those instincts has made a tremendous difference in her quality of life.

Find out what your dog was bred to do. Learn about their genetics and their natural tendencies. Then give them safe, appropriate ways to express those behaviors.

A dog that gets to be who they are is often a happier, more fulfilled dog. It can make all the difference.
