Our closing #CuriousCurating session with @qudusonikeku was one of those gifts from the gods that you never know when or where it will come. We were outside instead of inside, Friday instead of Thursday, two days after Qudus’s birthday, and a whopping two hours together despite his tight schedule as Director of the J. Randle Centre for Yorùbá Culture & History @jrandlecentre. In his words:

“It is ‘spiriting’ that on April 24, by 12 noon, we all will be sitting down here, talking about this exactly. Yorùbás don’t believe in coincidence. Everything has been written. Ayanmọ̀. Destiny. All through your life, you’ll be getting flashes of remembrance. It is now up to you to know how to listen—and make use of. That is where Èṣù becomes one of our most important deities, at the crossroads of every decision we make.”

Qudus had been walking us through his own process of “listening in”—from initiating his now-legendary “Dance Gathering” on Lagos’s Broad Street without official permission, to speaking truth at government gatherings designed for sloganeering, to gaining funds for his traveling art initiatives without appearing in the funders’ spaces; to being appointed as the director of a civic institution despite (or because of?) his revolutionary vision.

His bold and breezy conversation opened space for participants to share own their hopes and challenges. He responded with a patient yet unbothered ease, urging us to bypass blockages and find our niche. Group member and supporting facilitator Sadiq Williams @sawilliamsai put Qudus’s track record in context, from the impact of his fluid and interdisciplinary gatherings, to the legacy of his Glover Memorial Hall “happenings.” Qudus recalled:

“We were unafraid, we were not worried. Nobody was judging; everything was possible. People were pouring paint on the streets. And I’ll be like, guys don’t worry—anything go happen, only me dem go arrest.”

This is definitely not a dump. It's the public proof that something incredibly life changing happened to myself and a few others this month.

@rriskinitall and @patrickodimnfe conceived an idea that ignited our cohort and set us in motion.

Watch out for everyone in these slides. We're not coming, we're already here🫶🏾 taken in DIDI Museum by @myqueen_es

"A black man should be a millionaire, why are we so poor? It's time to investigate". Quote given to @lemighariokwu by Fela.

Today was Day 4 of the Curious Curating workshop with @rriskinitall and @patrickodimnfe of @didimuseum and we had the privilege of having Uncle Lemi Ghariokwu take us through his artistic journey, his work with Fela and his personal philosophy. It was such an insightful and engaging experience and it charged us young people to "hold your own" and "know thyself". taken in DIDI Museum by @myqueen_es

Konboye Eugene @konboyeeugene works with discarded flip flops, slippers, and shoes collected from the streets, transforming them into portraits, sculptures, and installations. Using this single material, his practice continues to evolve while maintaining a zero-waste approach, where every part of the footwear is used.

What Becomes Legacy opens the artist’s studio to the public for a three-day open studio in Abeokuta. Visitors are invited to step into the space, see where his work has been, where it currently is, and what he is currently exploring.

Dates: March 27–29

I went to see The Other Order, an exhibition curated by @obiajuluozegbe

The exhibition is set in the abandoned classrooms of CMS Primary School, with a clear view of a park for CAT trucks and bulldozers outside. This detail alone does something subtly powerful to the story.

It is a multi-sensory exhibition that reflects on the demolition and displacement of the Masafejo community in Oworonshoki in 2023. This continues to happen in different places across the country and even around the world.

Being in that exhibition made me feel two things at once. Grateful that I could not personally relate, and angry that people, families, and children had to lose their land, their homes, and their memories to the insensitivity of government.

In the last house, This House is Not For Sale by @dharmhie, I got to write two letters. One to the affected families and one to our government.

I left with a broken, affected, and more aware spirit. taken in Bariga by @myqueen_es
