My hip-hop albums collection. (Re)evaluated all the time, with the keepers being shown here 🎧

POSTS STORIES REELS

T.F. & Muggs "Don't Call Me Lucky" (2026) 💣 The best Muggs collabo in recent years. T.F. is one authentic M.F. and it's east to buy his g-stories. And whenever Muggs decides to give more attention to drums, it's fire. A tough hip-hop but very entertaining. What is not entertaining is the freaking DVD like packaging which neither fits any CD shelf, nor is easy to capture in IG format. Muggs should really stick to the regularly-shaped cases, it's annoying.

Strange Fruit Project "The Lost Documents Volume 1" (2007) 💣 Why, oh why have I waited so long to give this CD a spin? I love Strange Fruit Project, I consider their "The Healing" album one of my personal classics and yet for some reason I was avoiding this compilation. Was I afraid that such "lost tapes" releases tend to carry much less quality then studio albums? Probably. And in this case I was hella wrong. It's just more of the same goodness by SFP as usual, namely a funk-, gospel-, soul-influenced hip-hop, positive vibes all over, sounding more like an album than a collection of random tracks. Another reason to love those guys' music.

Boogiemonsters "God Sound" (1997) 🎤 The sophomore (and the last one) album by the crew is less respected compared to their debut but nevertheless offers a lot of goodness. Good guys, good rappers, good beats, good experience, good hip-hop era. All good here.

Ice Cube "Lethal Injection" (1993) 💣 Rarely ever it happens when a rapper has such a run as Cube at the beginning of his solo career. 4 classic albums (plus a great EP and a compilation of b-sides/bootlegs) make for an unforgetabble experience. "Lethal Injection" is widely considered the weakest link here which speaks for itself as it's a one dope release full of smart street tales and the Westcoast swag. Ta da.

Arabian Prince "Brother Arab" (1989) 🎧 Well, this took me by surprise. N.W.A.'s forgotten member supposed to offer me a typical late eighties boring, outdated hip-hop stuff. Instead I keep nodding head to those heavy drums. Arab's average mic skills actually do not disturb at all. He is not a gangsta by any means here - kinda street but more on the party tip and not without some conscious elements. A keeper!

Non Phixion "The Future Is Now" (2002) ☢️ Welcome to the world of conspiracies, drugs, street hustle, pesimism and paranoia. Those guys tell like they see it, don't lack skills and charisma and have a great taste in production. Necro, Large Pro, Pete Rock and DJ Premier among others provide a classic backdrop to this album. One of the best hip-hop offerings in 2002.

Ugly Heroes "Ugly Heroes" (2013) 🔥 If you asked me about Apollo Brown today, I would say he got boring in the last fee years. For instance I really don't see any appeal in his albums with Skyzoo or Ty Farris. But when we go back to his earlier work, the dude was a monster. Ugly Heroes is a trio where Apollo teamed up with Verbal Kent and Red Pill, two emcees with a knack for real life stories about every day struggles. One of many gems in Apollo's discography.

The Grouch & Eligh "Say G&E!" (2009) 🔥 Seems like the Living Legends crew has dropped like hundreds of albums in different constellations. And this might be my personal favourite. So many songs here have the "it" factor causing me to stop and pay attention while being one of the kind, special, original, fresh. I look at lukewarm reactions to this album and realise that this is exactly the case where words "my personal classic" won't met with understanding 😉 17 years passed and I still love it.

Volume 10 "Hip-Hopera" (1994) 🎧 Crime Boss "Conflicts & Confusion" (1997) 🎧 Two unrelated CD's pictured together because: 1) I have listened to them in a row 2) Both were new to me and surprisingly good 3) They kinda show that our music choices and tastes can be totally random. 4) They can be both described as funky but in a totally different way. Keepers.

The Gift Of Gab "4th Dimensional Rocketships Going Up" (2004) 💣 One of the best emcees ever born actually never got his flowers. Neither Blackalicious albums, nor his solo efforts are well known among casual hip-hop fans. A pity. This guy's rhyme sequences are simply unmatched, clever wordplay and a total command over his verses. The album on the pic is his solo debut and probably his best album under own moniker. Produced by Jake One and Vitamin D provides an insight to his life as an emcee and as a simple dude that he was. RIP Gab

UGK "Dirty Money" (2001) 💰 The most disregarded album by the duo as they attempted to get into mainstream. I still dig it much more than their outdated debut and had so much guilty pleasure that I decided to keep the CD. Southern gangsta pimpin isn't my thing by any means but it's hella entertaining when made by Bun B and Pimp C.
