Masahisa Fukase was a Japanese photographer, and his wife, Yōko Wanibe, appeared frequently in his work. In the summer of 1973, while they were still married and living together in Tokyo, he began photographing her from their apartment window as she left for work. He repeated this over many mornings, and the images later became known as the From Window series. Fukase photographed her in other settings as well, and at least one of those photographs was taken against her will, and although she objected to it, he promised not to publish it. He later published it anyway. Yōko later wrote that he only seemed to see her through the camera and described their life together as suffocating. She filed for divorce in 1976. The photographs were eventually exhibited and published, and the series is now regarded as a record of their marriage shortly before it ended.#history #historical #storytime by @mysteriesoftheabandoned

Henrietta Lacks was born in 1920 in Virginia and later moved to Baltimore, where she lived with her husband and five children. In early 1951, she went to Johns Hopkins Hospital after noticing unusual vaginal bleeding and a painful lump in her cervix.Doctors examined her and diagnosed her with an aggressive form of cervical cancer. During a standard biopsy, a sample of her tumor was sent to a research lab without her knowledge or permission. This was common practice in 1951, when there were no regulations requiring patient consent for using discarded tissue in research.In the laboratory, scientists observed that her cancer cells behaved differently from ordinary human cells. Normal cells died quickly outside the body, but Henrietta’s cells continued dividing at a rapid rate. They became the first human cells that could survive and multiply indefinitely in lab conditions. The cell line was named HeLa, using the first two letters of her first and last name.HeLa cells were soon distributed to researchers around the world. They played a critical role in testing and producing the polio vaccine, were used extensively in cancer research, advanced the understanding of viruses, contributed to gene mapping, supported the development of IVF techniques, and were even sent into space to study how human cells respond to zero gravity and radiation. Over the decades, HeLa became one of the most widely used cell lines in biomedical science.Henrietta Lacks died on October 4, 1951, at the age of 31. She never knew that her cells had been taken or that they were being used in research. Her family remained unaware of the existence and global use of HeLa cells until the 1970s, when scientists contacted them for blood samples to better understand HeLa’s genetic characteristics.The story of Henrietta Lacks has since become central in discussions about medical ethics, informed consent, and the rights of patients over their biological materials. In the early 2000s, an ambitious project took shape: a hotel designed to resemble a cruise ship, complete with seven stories, sweeping decks, and over 70 rooms. Though it never sailed, it aimed to offer a unique experience on land. The venture struggled with setbacks — from economic troubles to local unease — and was eventually abandoned.
