Today in Vienna, I found myself standing before a manuscript nearly 1,500 years old.

The Vienna Dioscurides.
A botanical medicinal codex created around 500 CE, filled with illustrations of medicinal plants and the accumulated wisdom of generations.

What fascinated me most was not only the beauty of the illustration or the feeling of looking at a book that has survived for nearly fifteen centuries.

Written in Greek.
Annotated in Arabic.
Carried across centuries, cultures, and empires.

Standing there, I was reminded that long before laboratories, patents, and pharmaceutical textbooks, there were people sitting with plants.
Watching them. Working with them. Learning their rhythms.

Passing their knowledge from one generation to the next.
The languages changed.
The kingdoms changed.
The plants remained.
There is something profoundly moving about seeing a living thread of botanical wisdom preserved across 1,500 years and realizing that we are still participating in that same conversation today.

Before there were books, there were flowers.

The ancient Egyptians watched the lotus close with the setting sun and rise again with the dawn. In its daily rhythm they saw one of the deepest mysteries of existence: that life renews itself through cycles of darkness and light.

These temple walls preserve that memory.
Stone remembers what the river taught.
The sun returns. The lotus opens. The world begins again.

Before you had a name,
you were water and ether.

Before thought,
there was depth.

Before light,
there was mud.
Dark. Thick. Unseen.

And from that something in you rose.
A slow, patient ascent
through muddy waters.

The lotus grows because of the mud.
It opens when the sun arrives.

Maybe awakening is not effort
or escape.

Maybe it is allowing the light to guide
Rising clean and luminous
from exactly where you began.
