Tektōn
ancient Greek
1 Carpenter, woodworker or builder.
2 Any craftman or workman.
⁝
Jesus & his father Joseph are both described as tektōn. [See Matthew 13:55; Mark 6:3]
In the Septuagint, the Greek noun tektōn either stands for the generic Hebrew noun kharash or kharash-etsim – craftsman or craftman of woods. [See 2 Samuel 5:11; 2 Kings 12:11, 12; Isaiah 41:7; Isaiah 44:13]
⁝
“In the context of first-century Israel, the tektōn was a general craftsman who worked with stone, wood, and sometimes metal in large and small building projects.” – Ken Campbell
⁝
Etymology of Architect.
Arch (chief) tektōn (builder). [See 1 Corinthians 3:10; Hebrews 11:10]
⁝
What amazes me is that the Master craftsman/builder of this world came to inhabit with us as a humble Carpenter. Isn’t that love?
⁝
Then I was beside Him, as a master craftsman;
and I was daily His delight;
rejoicing before Him always,
(…)
For whoever finds Me finds life
and obtains favor and grace from the Lord.
[Proverbs 8:30, 35 – AMP version]

How to design ━ learning from nature

We stopped teaching Architects to go out and 𝘮𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘦 the real world and to 𝘰𝘣𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘦 𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐩𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐚, because we believed that sophisticated technology rendered this quaint sort of measurement obsolete. Instead of all those old-fashioned traditional craft-based materials and techniques, we put our faith in clever new materials.

We were 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘵𝘰 𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘯 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞. Things don’t smash together, they transmute. There is a 𝘩𝘪𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘩𝘺 of parts and a 𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 language in how the parts might fit together. I consider these the 𝘮𝘰𝘴𝘵 important lessons in design, because they are the building blocks of architecture. And yet they are not taught any more.

𝐈𝐬 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐬 that 𝘨𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘯 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 line you draw and 𝘥𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘦 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘬 as an Architect. These principles are scarcely dwelled on in architectural schools any longer. Today there is not a driving attitude that governs a particular way of thinking. We have such a choice that paradoxically we are impoverished.

A project without accompanying objectives has no purpose nor direction.

What gives direction to the overall work and are the basis for all the other detailed requirements, are

◽ 1° Principles &
◽ 2° Objectives

We are usually preoccupied with short-term tasks that need to be done, but a successful project team never loses sight of the greater, higher goal… So, instead of focusing on the building itself, we could ponder on the values (the materialization of those first ideals) it delivers to families and society.

That’s your mission, not only as an Architect or creative Professional, but as a human being.

Summing up,
∟ this mission/purpose is sustained by principles, functioning like design axes;
∟ principles concretize as objectives, linking your God-given talents to the needs of your neighbour.

If, throughout the process, mission – principles – objectives are aligned in a clear path, the outcome will be sincere & truthful.

⇨ That’s a successful project,
a blessing from God, both to you and your neighbour.

━━━

Quotes from Joyful surrender by Elisabeth Elliot:

No longer would [the converted Christian] be scheming ways to outdo [his colleagues], cheat them, gain preference over them in the employer’s eyes. (…) It would change his attitude toward the work itself because he would do it not for show, not for promotion or bonuses or compliments(…), but with single-mindedness, for Christ. It would change the quality of the work, for he has a Master who sees what no other overseer could spot: not only every detail of the work done, but the intentions of the heart.

When complexities and difficulties abound, having
⇨ a competent, experienced and reliable Project Manager;
⇨ an Investor that ensures the flow of financing till completion;
⇨ a building Contractor whose plummet has never failed;
brings great peace of mind.

The Jewish people had to start by faith, because God had ensured the completion of the Temple (Zechariah 4:9).

(…) “Be courageous,” declares the Lord, “and work; for I AM with you,” declares the Lord of hosts. “As for the promise which I made with you when you came out of Egypt, My Spirit stands [firm and immovable] and continues with you; do not fear!” ━ Haggai 2:4, 5 [AMP]

“The silver is Mine and the gold is Mine,” declares the Lord of hosts. ━ verse 8

What matter the scoffs of mockers, if God approves? (…) If we try to get so near God as to see things with His eyes, we shall be saved from many a false estimate of what is great and what is small, and may have our own poor little doings invested with strange dignity, because He designs to behold and bless them. ━ MacLaren

So, work enthusiastically on that seemingly small task that God has put at hand.
visit
Do it well,
& for His glory.

You know…
Who would have thought that five hundred years later, those same humble foundations would be honored by the visit of the Master Architect of the Temple?

“The latter glory of this house will be greater than the former,” says the Lord of hosts, “and in this place I shall give peace and prosperity,” declares the Lord of hosts”. ━ Haggai 2:9 [AMP]

There’s much work we don’t appreciate behind a finished project.

It’s invisible – passing as insignificant for most eyes.
∟ Apostle Paul would say: “We look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are unseen; (…)” ━ 2 Corinthians 4:18 [AMP]
∟ Saint-Exupéry echoed that thought: “What is essential is invisible to the eye.”

◽ Are the foundations unimportant?
◽ Going back to the stakeout axes?
◽ What about the professional in charge of diagramming the construction budget curve?

Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin, to see the plumb line in Zerubbabel’s hand. ━ Zechariah 4:10 [NLT]

The apparently insignificant and unimportant tasks are in God’s special regard.

Our task is to “do the little we can do, and leave the rest with God”, sure that He will work all the fragments into a perfect whole, and content to do the smallest bit of service for Him. ━ MacLaren

The rebuilding of the Temple was a seemingly impossible task. The first Temple, built by King Solomon, had been destroyed by the Babylonians. Political and economic setbacks delayed this project. (Sounds relevant?)
In comparison to its former glory, this second Temple seemed like nothing (Haggai 2:3). That’s why some despised the humble foundations, falling prey to a vulgar error in measuring.

If we realize that God’s Spirit is the guarantee for the success of work done for God, we shall escape the vulgar error of measuring the importance of things by their size, as, no doubt, many of these builders were doing. ━ Idem.

Architects, do you want to make “good” & “pleasant to the sight” architecture?

Creative professionals aim to design purposefully – a creation that fulfils the utility requirements while meeting the aesthetic expectations.

Since the industrial revolution, two (closely related) concepts started to grow apart: utility vs. ornamentation.

Have you perceived what happens when we only focus on functionality?
Expressionless, “soulless” projects.

Moreover, what happens when we only focus on decoration?
Capriciousness. Impulsive projects.

Usefulness can be beautiful, and it should be, because beauty also has a functionality!

First, let’s study both concepts together:

And out of the ground made the Lord God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; (…). – Genesis 2:9

In God’s creation, two relevant qualities of the trees are mentioned – aesthetic & functionality. You see, God was not only preoccupied with our body nourishment, but with the enrichment of our mind and soul!

Particularly to Architecture concerns the responsibility of designing and constructing a dwelling for the material, but also for the spiritual, life. The condition of our home, the way we live, influences our physical and mental health… I’ll leave that study for another post.

In our next study, we will explore the two concepts separately: function & beauty – and what’s God definition of both.

Lastly, I’m sharing a few Bible commentaries regarding Gen. 2:9:

Agreeable to the taste & useful to the body. So that both man’s mind & body were gratified and enriched. – Benson

God, as a tender Father, desired not only Adam’s profit, but also his pleasure. – Matthew Henry

❇ He who would guess at divine sublimity should gaze upward into the starry vault;
◦ he who would imagine infinity must peer into the boundless expanse;
◦ he who desires to see divine wisdom should consider the balancing of the orbs;
◦ he who would know the divine fidelity must mark the regularity of the planetary motions;

— Spurgeon, from The treasury of David
⁝
Caspar David Friedrich sought not just to explore the blissful enjoyment of a beautiful view, as in the classic conception, but rather to examine an instant of sublimity, a reunion with the spiritual self through the contemplation of nature.

Did you know he was raised in the Lutheran creed of his father?

Artists such as Friedrich, J. M. W. Turner and John Constable sought to depict nature as a "divine creation, to be set against the artifice of human civilization".
