Gardens should feel magical!

…and that is exactly what the @botanicgardentc Children’s Garden is becoming.

Only two years old, this garden is already filled with so many playful and imaginative elements designed to bring out the kid in all of us.

A stumpery to explore, plants full of scent, texture, and color, a willow hideaway, a waterfall, a kaleidoscope, and so many little surprises tucked throughout.

It’s a beautiful reminder that gardens aren’t just places to look at—they’re places to explore, touch, discover, and wonder.

Definitely one to put on your garden-visit list!

The educational sessions were packed with ideas, inspiration, and practical takeaways we can bring home and put into action.

Great suggestions for the home gardener, plenty of inspiration for landscape designers and professionals, and something for every plant lover in between.

Plants, people, and a whole lot of flower arranging!

What a joy to work alongside the amazing volunteers at @botanicgardentc as we get ready for Great Lakes, Great Plants!

Just look at these arrangements! All dressed up and ready to welcome everyone to the symposium starting Thursday.

We’ll kick things off with a full day of inspiring speakers, followed by dinner and, of course… a plant auction! (Because apparently we all need more plants. 😉)

Then Friday, we’re off to explore some stunning gardens, connect with fellow plant lovers, and soak up all the inspiration.

This is my kind of gathering — plants, gardens, and really great people. Can’t wait!

LEARN YOUR INVASIVES:
Tree of Heaven (Not So Heavenly!)

Meet Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus altissima). Despite its heavenly name, this invasive species is anything but!

At first glance, it looks remarkably similar to some of our native sumacs. But these two plants play VERY different roles in our ecosystems.

Tree of Heaven has allelopathic properties, meaning it releases chemicals that can inhibit the growth of neighboring plants. Combined with its aggressive growth and prolific seed production, it can quickly dominate an area, displacing native vegetation and reducing biodiversity.

Two plants that look similar, yet have dramatically different impacts on our ecosystems.

The more we know, the better we can grow! 🌱

Monarda punctata… I’m in love!!!

From her stunning silvery foliage to her incredible pollinator magnetism, this is one native plant I think we need to use more in our garden designs.

I love the way those soft, silvery tones pop against all the greens in the garden. She brings something unexpected… a little texture, a little drama, and definitely a lot of pizzazz.

If you’re looking for a native plant that feels a bit different while still doing important work for our pollinators, Monarda punctata (spotted beebalm) is a winner in my book.

Maybe I’m especially drawn to all that silver because I’m noticing more of it in my own hair these days. 😂

Maybe we’re soil sisters.🌱

Brian is the owner of Designs By Nature South, a native plant nursery specializing in Michigan-genotype grasses and wildflowers. He also serves as Chief Park Horticulturist for the Genesee County Parks and Recreation Commission, where he oversees the maintenance and development of For-Mar Nature Preserve & Arboretum.

Walk through a friend’s garden.

Take your time. Wander. Notice.

There’s something so inspiring about seeing a garden through another gardener’s eyes to marvel at the artistic process and notice how the relationship between gardener and garden has unfolded over time.

What has the conversation been?
Where did the gardener lead, and where did the garden have other ideas?

I absolutely loved wandering through Jacques’ garden, thanks to a wonderful tour with @msumatadoor and @trina.quint.

Gardens have such a beautiful way of inspiring one another while still telling their own unique stories.

What inspires you when you walk through someone else’s garden?

(I was in awe of his compost pile😍)
