Visual artist Mohit Mahato (@myvisualcanvas) grew up in Jamshedpur surrounded by “everything steel”. A misfired flowerpot accident, a burnt right-arm and the isolation of recovery in eleventh grade led him to studying fine arts at the Karnataka Chithrakala Parishath. For over a decade now, Mohit has been in love with the city’s flowers and trees and made them a crucial part of his practice. He doesn’t just draw them, he transforms them into the covers for his artist books, squirrels away hand-painted scrolls into their seedpods and even uses them as ‘paper’ for his art.

‘Hands on Nature’ a tactile work I made for @mapbangalore ‘s Permanent Collection exhibition, ‘Beneath the Turning Sky’

A little late to post this, but I wanted to share it.

Last year, when @mounika.nallani invited me to make a work for the exhibition, I had no idea what I would make. I just told her, “The best thing to touch is to touch nature.” And here it is. The seedpods I have collected over the past two years are now on display at @mapbangalore .

I tried to make it look like a flower, but now, when people tell me that it looks like a gramophone, I reply, “Yes, try to listen to nature.” Some say it looks like a snake, and I say, “Yes, because you are standing around trees.”
So now I leave it to people to see whatever they can see.

It is one of those works I have made that makes me feel so beautiful, and for which I would like to thank @khushibansal24 , @meghanakuppa , @mounika.nallani , @sodaputti ,@vineetkajrolkar , and the entire MAP team. If I’m missing someone, thank you to you too. And a special thanks to @shivu.mahesh and @waron_waves for helping me make this work. 🌷

A tiny glimpse behind the scenes of Origins, an exhibition celebrating the magical medium of cyanotypes through the works of 49 practitioners across India! 💙🥰

The show has been co-curated by @woohoochild @myvisualcanvas @greeshmap with a whole lot of heart, and we really hope you can visit us at Studio345, @sandboxcollective before we send the artworks back to all the artists!

P.S. The glorious ‘Cyanotunes’ you hear in the background has been composed by my dear friend Mayur @copycatdesign @sixflyingwhales for the show, inspired by the cyanotype process

After spending the last few years playing around with cyanotype, it feels rather special to celebrate World Cyanotype Day with an exhibition bringing together 49 artists from across India.

It has been such a lovely experience co-curating this with @myvisualcanvas and @woohoochild 💙💙

So much blue, so many different ways of working with cyanotype, and each artist bringing something of their own.

‘𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙛𝙡𝙤𝙬𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙄 𝙥𝙞𝙘𝙠𝙚𝙙 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙞𝙣 𝙢𝙮 𝙨𝙝𝙞𝙧𝙩 𝙥𝙤𝙘𝙠𝙚𝙩’

Last year I wrote a lot of letters. I felt like I didn’t want to stop writing, but somehow I had to stop.

A few months ago, my dear friend @joepaulcyriac invited me to be part of this exhibition Flower Show at @neighbourhq and asked if I could do something with letters.

And here it is.

For the past month, I have been writing a letter every day to the exhibition.
These letters are conversations with my own heart, a place where I hold love, longing, loneliness, grief, memories, and the quiet things that often remain unspoken. They aren’t written to arrive anywhere. They are written to stay, to be witnessed, and to gather over time.

I’ve always loved writing letters to people I love, on birthdays, New Year’s, while travelling, or simply because I felt like writing. Writing, drawing, and sending something physical has always made me feel like myself. As life became busier, I slowly lost this habit, This work is partly about returning to that feeling.
Each letter is a small seed. Together, they become a garden, a small archive of what I was feeling, thinking, missing, and loving during this time.
