Handspinning yarns at a small sheep farm in the blue ridge mountains #fleecetoyarn #handspinnersofinstagram #yarnlove #yarnspinning

It’s so nice to have a finished object as the weather turns cooler 🍁 but even sweeter when it’s handspun, soft, and gorgeous 😍 I did not have a pattern for this sweater but used my trusty Flax pattern by Tin Can Knits for the cast on and yoke numbers. The texture is a broken rib that has a wonderful waffle-ish bouncy texture. I added a folded neckline, 6 stitch raglan, and split hem.

The yarn is a 15.5 micron merino combed top I spun a couple weeks ago. I have half a mind to spin more and knit myself the same exact one 🤭 but I would definitely have to dye mine there is no way it would make it 3 hours and still white 🤷🏼‍♀️ The jury is still out as to whether it has enough positive ease but we will see how the yarn behaves after a few days wear. Worst case is it becomes mine (I wouldn’t mind that) and I knit another one in a larger size.

👩‍❤️‍👨 Made for my husband

A ✨ new project ✨ is in the works! A textured sweater for my husband - the most knitworthy human💕 He requested this texture in 15.5 micron handspun merino after I knit a cowl in it a couple of weeks ago. I don’t usually spin yarn for a specific project so this was a break from my norm and it has brought me a lot of joy to be spinning and knitting for his specific request. He originally wanted it dyed a rich forest green but is now toying with the idea of leaving it natural “until I stain it with something” and then dying it 😂 I think it’s a decent proposal myself 🤷🏼‍♀️

I finished my modified Jaunty by Andrea Mowry in handspun yarn and it is squishy, plump perfection 🥰

The biggest modification was going full-on brioche instead of half fisherman’s rib. I wanted a brioche project for this combo-plied handspun and something that could use all of my yardage and the Jaunty was easy to convert. This is the 3rd one I have knit so knowing I was comfortable with this pattern made me confident going in on making a texture swap. I also knew I was pushing it with less than 500 yards so I increased to a width I liked and knit until I had just enough yarn for the decreases to maximize length for the yardage I had available.

I am very happy with it - it is soft and bouncy and a great length for me. Plus you really can’t beat a good project in handspun yarn. It’s just special ✨

The yarn was a combo spin of polwarth and merino/silk.

Weekend knitting is *chef’s kiss * 🤌🏻

Here’s a thing I ✨really✨ like about colorful handspun - it is so nice to watch your progress flow through the colors 😍 My preferred wardrobe additions are generally single colored and if I don’t add a progress keeper it’s hard to intuitively feel how much I’ve knit. But with the barber-poled Handspun skeins with lots of color and their ever-changing hues every row feels new and you can see how much you’ve done with a glance 🥰

I am really enjoying this slightly modified Jaunty by Andrea Mowry in a combo-spin of handspun polwarth and silk 🧶

I finished this Friday Slipover by Petite Knits, washed and blocked, hung it up and saw an error in worst place an error could be 😮‍💨 right in the center of the belly. Luckily it was on a knit column in the broken rib pattern so I picked out the bind off, dropped the stitch up to the error, and was able to crochet my way back down and bind off again. In total the fix took about 30 minutes and was very, very worth it. Now it looks the way it should but could use another wash since I made some wonky places with my repair 🤷🏼‍♀️

This garment looks nice and it fits well but I am not in love with it. This yarn is dense - and while the vest isn’t exactly drapey it has a bouncy feel to it on the hanger. I would like to make this again in a lighter, airy, woolen spun yarn as I think I would prefer that for my own use.

😐 6/10 I like the textured pattern and the fit but dislike the yarn choice for this project

Now I’ve got the shaping-in-pattern down for this broken rib texture and feel like I can wing a handspun sweater for my husband without much trouble. So an overall worthwhile project.

🗣️Me: “Mama, let me show you this cowl I knit from my 15.5 micron handspun it is as soft as cashmere!”
🗣️Mama: “It looks like you have been in an accident and they needed to stabilize your neck. But it is soft!”
Me: “😂 maybe I should dye it a different color then”

It is insanely 💕squishy💕and the wool is so soft you almost can’t feel it on your skin when spinning it.

And this project in its lovely texture has set off a cascade of events that has me now knitting a textured vest for myself so I can figure out the in-pattern shaping skills I need to knit my husband an all-over textured sweater this year. I bought some yarn for this exact purpose last year but after seeing this cowl this he said, 🤔”I think I would really like one in 15.5 micron handspun……” 🤌🏻

So- I am going to finish my current vest project and then start spinning for his sweater because he is the most ✨ knit-worthy✨ person on the planet. by @mywoolobsession

🧶 Another sweet little thing off the needles 🍭This time for Ashby - who waffled the entire project that she did or did not want it (on the basis that it is NOT pink 💅 and should be) until the lace hit and suddenly I couldn’t finish it fast enough for her.

This isn’t a written pattern - just elements of a few things I wanted to test out. It should be a nice piece with leggings this year, a tunic next, and a T-shirt after that. I’m hoping for at least 4 years out of this. Plus she gets to have a matching sweater to her Mimi 💕 for a few years at least.

💁🏼‍♀️ Told you I had the knitting fire blazing 🔥

Before and after blocking this Midlothian shawl by Dee O’Keefe in my handspun yarn. It grew and the lacework opened up beautifully 🤌🏻 It’s light but a still got a good squish factor thanks to the airy 15.5 micron merino. It’s soft - like within the realm of cashmere soft 🥰 now when is the weather going to change so I can use this thing 🍂

A handspun FO feels extra special 😍 I loved this colorway and since it was a mystery batt I decided to keep it for myself. This cast on was right on the heels of a stockinette-heavy adult sweater and my brain was itching for something a little bit more so I chose this cowl with a smidge of lacework. I knew the lace would largely be lost in the yarn but my brain was super happy and the undulating lace created a nice break up in the stripes created by the handspun. This is a free pattern and the second one I have knit. It’s soft and squishy. I will mostly wear it folded down around my neck but with the benefit of being long enough to pull up and over my hears and nose if the weather is cold or rainy. I have about 40 yards left and thing a headband may be workable and then this into a nice winter set.

It fits!!!! 😍💕😍💕 and we have a happy Mama/Mimi. It has not been blocked yet and to be quite frank I think it may end up too big. I’ve used this yarn once before and my notes say, “This yarn grows. And grows. And grows.” But for now she is smitten and I’m happy to give it to her. It has definitely lit my 🔥 knitting fire 🔥 back up and even though I finished weaving in the ends 20 minutes ago I am absolutely itching to cast on something new. I’m trying to decide on a pattern for one of my handspun yarns from tour de fleece 🤔 waffling between a cowl and a hood.

This is as good as it gets because, “don’t put me on the internet” - My Mama 😂

The Tour is over, I gave my hands a break for a few days, and jumped into a knitting project. I am working on a pullover sweater for my Mama after many not-so-subtle hints and hard stares as I finished the last couple of sweaters I had on my needles at the beginning of the year. She chose the color and was excited Saturday when I cast it on at her house. We pulled a sweater out of her closet she liked the fit of and measured it so hopefully I can get close. I am using the Flax DK pattern by Tin Can Knits as my base for the sweater with some modifications- namely omitting the garter stitch detail, adding a folded neckline, and in the next day or so I will be adding a split hem. The yarn is a now discontinued Berroco Renew in Blue Jay.

The #tourdefleece was a good one this year. I love the camaraderie that comes with making and sharing yarns during the event. I don’t usually join a team but I did this year and will probably be a Stash Dasher for life now 😆 because I will undoubtedly always have a stash that needs dashing.

The yarns will continue to be spun and shared and shipped out and I hope the community remains.
