The joys in teaching are often too involved and too embedded in the tidal-like ebb and flow of success and failure. The audience listening doesn’t really have all the context of the teaching and learning story. Nevertheless, the narrative remains sacred to those of us who grow to love other peoples’ babies.

Raymond Nyatoti embodies all of the core attributes we hold close at Richland High School. He is an exceptional young man, but the resilience he demonstrates day in and day out is unmatched. He is a menace on the grid iron and that same spirit shows up every day in room 1120 at Richland High School.

Every day he shows up to learn. Every day he gives his best. Every day his quiet strength accompanies his commitment to excellence. As I told his parents, there is no quit in this young man.

Not sure what a beautiful sunset signifies for you, but for me it means…

God’s hands are upon us, within us, and among us as my daughter sits at his knee.

The brash and bold streaks of color painted across the sky are echoes of her laughter and the promise that something beautiful waits for each of us.

Our 35th anniversary! (Two weeks ago! ) Big Joe outdid himself!!!
4 states
2 Golf packages
3 baseball games
5 College campuses (and all their athletic facilities)
An architecture cruise down the Chicago River
And so much good food!

So thankful to grow up with my favorite overgrown eighth grader!

Just days after 4th of July a few years back, I saw a tree on a New Mexico golf course. Half of it stood lush with thick green leaves, lifted boldly by a knotty, brown trunk, its healthy girth spread below. The other half of the tree - trunk to stem - blanched gray by the sun, stood equal in death as its other half reveled in life. And I thought… “That’s me. “
That tree- half beautifully alive- half blanched gray with death- metaphorically, that’s me.

Days later, I had the privilege of making brownies for people I love. I watched the cocoa-colored powder drift into the bowl while the butter melted.

When the batter was thoroughly mixed, I began pouring it into my brownie pan, its years marked by the dozens of brownies served to our favorite red-head’s friends, their laughter etched in our dining room table as deep as the grooves in the bark of that desert tree.

I heard each note of remembered joy as the spoon scraped the edges of my ceramic bowl.

I watched the chocolate goodness collect in the spoon’s edges and leave a white streak in its absence across the bowl’s interior.

Then I thought of the life, of the girl we mourn, of joyful days poignantly adorned with her absence, of the twelve years that have ticked by, of the tree, half of it thriving and thick, sunshine coursing through its veins, of what is left of us, of how much I don’t want there to be a world without Taylor, and how much living we’ve scraped out of the bowl anyway, by the grace of God and the unrelenting prayers of so many.

I hope we always scrape the edges of this life- that we, like Taylor Renee, love so well that those in our circle never wonder. I hope the part of us that still lives -lives with purposeful intention and a little reckless abandon. And if we are similar to the old oak, beautifully defiant against the dead half it cradles, I hope in that union someone sees an eternal hope, a promise of belonging, the Light of the world.

These beautiful women!!

Once, they were “my girls” making run through signs and emceeing world class pep assemblies.

Now, they are remarkable mothers and professionals! That they still remember and include me literally makes my eyes leak and my throat close.

You get into a field like education because you love kids and wanna make a difference. Then, they love you back and you realize the invaluable gifts you have been given.

Wishing all the blessings for @houston.russell8 and his beautiful bride, Madison.

We took some my sister’s ashes into the woods where the wind bends between the pine and spruce and wildflowers dance. An ancient rock looks over the valley that lies beneath Poncha Pass, a perfect view. Our banter remains, despite the ache. In step with Tara’s spirit, my niece and brother left the Rainbow Trail momentarily and hoofed it up to an outcropping of rocks; my mother doesn’t even try to stop us these days. It’s just what her kids do when challenge invites us. #cancersucks but heaven is real, and so, we keep climbing.

National donate life month...

I remember when Taylor Renee🌻 updated her driver’s license from her permit to the real deal.

We stood there at the local DMV, filling out the form and enacting this right of passage like many of you do. She looked up at me when she reached the question asking if she wanted to be an organ donor.

I matter-of-factly responded with, “You plan on needing your organs when are perfect in heaven?”

In true Taylor fashion, a product of her daddy’s quick witted ego, she said, “Well...no”, checked the yes box, and with a flip of her copper colored hair added, “and I’m pretty perfect now.”

Her “I’m entertained with myself” laugh followed, and she became an organ donor.
A more serious conversation occurred in the car since her mother is never short of object lessons... #sigh

We couldn’t imagine having to act on her wishes-but we did after a drunk driver killed our girl-

Giving of herself to someone else in need was just a part of who she was...when she wasn’t being sassy. 🤣

Today, after folks close to me live because of the miracle of an organ transplant, my heart stretches and aches at the sacrifice —but knows it is the right decision for us.

Give the gift of life. Consider being an organ donor. Do you have the little red heart?
