Ryan 🤍

I wonder if you remember long ago, when we were both sleeping in different rooms, we both woke up before anyone else at home, and I knocked on our joined wall to check if you were awake. I didn’t think you’d answer because we had never agreed that would be our signal. But you knocked back, and I jumped out of bed to see you.

I never thought I’d look through our photos and memories together to grieve you instead of to celebrate milestones with you.

I’ve been holding these words in because I didn’t want to publicize them when I wasn’t lucky enough to say them to your face. I am so happy to have grown up alongside you. Thank you for always spending quality time with me, but thank you especially for our last time spent together last summer. I felt as though we were kids again, back when I was upset you weren't my older brother as well. I'm so glad I hugged you goodbye, even though I didn't know it would be permanent.

I deserved, we all deserved, to spend more time with you. This is a kind of pain I will never be free of, but if I’ve learned anything from you, it’s to be grateful despite difficulties. I hope to live up to even a quarter of what you are, so I will aspire to that goal.

I regret not pushing you to take more pictures with me or calling you more often when I was away. But how could I have known I’d lose the privilege of seeing your face and hearing your voice?

You always guarded everyone here, but I don’t think that was enough for you. You wanted to keep an eye out for everyone at once. You can be our guardian angel now, angel.

Please visit me in my dreams. Please never let me forget your laugh or your kindness. Please always knock back. I love you 🪽🤍 by @n.ooreid
