This image captures the frenzy that’s about to begin as the fish migration gets underway any day now and was recently featured in a story about my work in Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors magazine.

As the fish make their way toward the fish ladder for their run to freshwater to spawn, a host of birds gathers to feed. Along with eagles, osprey, and herons, hundreds of gulls converge, competing and often fighting over a single fish.

When I returned to the beach, one of the surprises waiting for me was a late hatch of four piping plover chicks.

This little one had just come out from beneath a parent’s wing after a nap and was off to explore the beach and look for something to eat.

Every now and then they’ll break into a little jump and stretch before taking off again. It happens in the blink of an eye, and if you’re lucky enough to catch it, it makes for some fun photos.

Keeping up with a piping plover chick is another story. They don’t spend much time waiting for photographers. Getting one in sharp focus would have been a bonus. 🤣

It felt good to return to the beach last evening. After being away for a couple of weeks, I found newly hatched least terns, a pair of piping plovers with four newly hatched chicks, and signs that the season is already moving into its next chapter.

Some of the earliest least tern chicks have now taken to the air and are beginning to explore beyond the stretch of beach where they hatched. This one spent quite a while perched on the rocks before lifting off and gliding back toward shore. The sunset light couldn’t have been more beautiful.

The season always seems to move faster than I expect. I feel soul nourished and blessed to witness it—and to preserve small pieces of it along the way.

Stay tuned… those new piping plover chicks are coming soon.

This little least tern chick never strayed far. A few tentative steps away from the adult, a few moments looking around, and then right back where it felt safest.

These photos were made during an evening visit to the beach earlier this month. I’m finally getting back there tonight after a couple of weeks away. I’m expecting a lot of changes, and I’m hoping to find some new least tern and piping plover families.

My expectations and reality usually don’t line up, so we’ll see what surprises are in store. 😁

After being away for several days, I was back on the lake Monday evening.

I wasn’t chasing anything in particular. I just needed the quiet.

For a while, this loon swam alongside the kayak. Being in the presence of loons has always been calming for me.

It felt good to be back on the water.

Two of my photographs, “In Soft Brilliance” and “Evening Passage,” will be included in a gallery exhibition that opens this week.

These images were made just a couple of weeks apart during Baby Loon’s first summer.

The first photograph, “In Soft Brilliance,” was created when she was about two weeks old, during the evening that became my Boat Wake Series. The second, “Evening Passage,” followed a short time later, when she was about a month old, swimming between her parents as sunset approached.

I’m pleased to see them included in the same exhibition, each offering a different glimpse into that summer on the lake.

It’s deeply rewarding to see moments that meant so much to me find meaning for others as well. I’m honored these two images have another opportunity to be seen.

It’s hard not to smile watching a piping plover family.

Every grain of sand might hide a meal. Every few steps lead to another discovery. Mom is never very far away.

I always hope to come home with a few good photographs. Fortunately, that’s rarely the only thing I leave with.

It’s easy for the piping plover chicks to capture all my attention when I’m at the beach with them, so today I’m taking a moment to appreciate the adults.

These remarkable little shorebirds are among the most vulnerable nesting birds on our beaches. An adult weighs just 1½–2 ounces, yet many migrate thousands of miles each year from beaches like these to winter along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts, with some continuing as far as the Bahamas and Cuba. Most will only live five or six years, making every successful nesting season that much more meaningful. The Atlantic Coast population is estimated at only about 2,300 breeding pairs.

I’m glad I get to spend time with them and share them with you.

All three young bald eagles have taken flight!

Just a few weeks ago they barely looked over the edge of the nest.

It’s not unusual for bald eagles to raise two chicks, but seeing all three reach the flight stage is something special.

They’re making short flights now, returning to the nest, then heading back out again as they gradually explore a little farther from home.

The weakest chick has had a tougher time. Its siblings have been aggressive toward it, but so far it’s hanging on and doing things at its own pace.

I’m hoping to see all three continue to flourish as I spend more time kayaking these waters this summer.

I rarely photograph the beach in the middle of the day, usually preferring the softer light at sunset. Recently I made an exception, and these little piping plover chicks made it worthwhile.

By then they were already spending much of their day searching for food on their own, stopping to investigate just about everything they came across.

I’m glad I went.
