A few shots from the last @sanjosedukes game. It was a loss, but a much better day for baseball than from the previous outing (or so I've heard). Starting to get a *little* better at taking these shots too.

I had the opportunity to visit historic Washington Park in Santa Clara today for a @sanjosedukes game and by jolly, what a venue. This is classic, nostalgic baseball at its finest and absolutely reeks of history from its wooden grandstands to its sunken dugouts.

And Babe Ruth played on this field during his barnstorming years in the 1930s so of *course* it's a historical site.

Great 10-6 win to top it off as well. Go Dukes!

Not pictured: the current chaos of that table which has the contents of a display stand that *might not even work*? I guess we'll see.

Building this was just as fun as I had hoped it would be, well worth the waiting and dreaming.

And now, the journey to display this in a way that doesn't take up so much room will be it's own journey 🙃

It.... begins.

My birthday and Christmas number one wishlist item, my Lego white whale, the greatest piece of junk in the galaxy, is ready to build.

Don't ask me where I plan to put it later, that's a Future Lance problem. by @nachomanlance

Wowie, Maui. What a trip. Despite trading a cold, we got to do pretty much everything we planned to do, and then some. I was very glad that I was able to focus most of our tourism and adventures towards businesses and groups that help to rebuild the community that was so badly hurt during the '23 wildfires.

Other things I'm glad I did? Make spam musubi a part of my daily diet, and boogie boarding for the first time in many years 🌊

Thanks for tagging me along @snappyz06 instead of letting me house husband alone again 🤙 by @nachomanlance

That's that, Bay Area Vintage Baseball has wrapped up their 2025 season.

It's crazy that a call for tryouts on the local San Jose subreddit led me to this group of guys, but despite throwing reason to the wind and neglecting the fact I've never played baseball competitively for *well* over two decades, I'm glad I took a chance. It became clear very early on that I was way in over my head and nowhere near the level of play they expected, and there was every reason in the world for me to just leave it at that and move on.

But I came to love the quirkiness of it all. It's a style of a sport I love that I had never seen before, full of its own traditions, rules, attitude and camaraderie. Everyone involved knows it isn't the safest way to play the game, but for the love of it, they do it anyway.

And more than that, for the majority of those who had been doing this for a long time, they weren't playing with a team - they were playing with a family.

And so when I got a call from the Dukes manager saying I didn't make the cut (HA, nowhere near it really), I told him it didn't matter. I knew I wanted to learn and play the game, no matter what it took.

So I went to as many games as I could. I warmed up with the team, did drills, learned from the bench, and studied opposing pitchers. After some time I started helping with setting up the home field and bringing water, just trying to be helpful. I made new friends. I slowly got better. There were some close calls where I was close to coming in, but by the end, I didn't play a single inning.

And that's just fine.

I know I still have a lot more to learn. If anything only my throwing strength has improved. I'm ok with that. Everything about vintage ball is so different from what I knew that I came to this accepting that I basically had to learn the game entirely from scratch. But I'm gonna get there. I'm playing coed softball in the meantime to pick up other skills and get used to playing again. I'm building a foundation. If it takes another season, or two, or three - eventually it'll happen.

Because this sport is weird as fuck, and it's awesome.

Summer 2025 pt. 2: The Banana-ing

(This is where you'll start noticing my phone camera screen is busted to hell - so these won't look the best. Fixing that soon.)

If you know nothing about @thesavbananas , you are missing out.

More of a circus show than a baseball game, a Bananaball game in the Bananaball League - yes, that's what they're called - is a non-stop party that will leave the casual baseball fan thoroughly confused but undeniably, thoroughly entertained. The Savannah Bananas are of course the most popular but all four teams in the Bananaball League are made up of professional baseball players of all backgrounds to perform trick plays on the field, showcase individual talents and just generally goof off and love the game they play to the fullest.

I honestly can't give you a good description more than that, so I encourage anyone reading this far to watch or skim through a game on YouTube and see for yourself, and wait impatiently for your next opportunity to see them. I'll be doing the same.

Special shout-out to @kelsie_whitmore (second photo in) for signing my ball and taking a picture with me and my sister. You represented SoCal well, and the trail you're blazing for women in professional baseball cannot be understated and I'm positive your example will help to usher in many more in the years to come. There's no doubt your performance will make younger generations of women ambitious and *ap-peel* more to the sport. 🍌

Summer 2025 pt. 1

If this was the summer of anything, it was the summer of concerts.

Starting off with the legendary Barry Manilow, a plane ride to Vegas for Backstreet Boys at the Sphere (holy shit go see *anything* there), global superstar and the inarguable GOAT "Weird Al" Yankovic (marking my 10th concert of his), and the back-to-back-to-back sluggers of New Found Glory, Jimmy Eat World, and The Offspring.

We were *going* to cap it all off with Billy Joel but he had a brain thing that prompted his cancellation, so I guess that's fair.

But holy shit, what a wild few months it's been. Saving the video clips here for viewing later.... and freeing up memory space. by @nachomanlance

Softball has been fun, but not going well competitively. So to try and get out of our slump I've adopted my Fred Durst persona - my Durstsona, if you will - and changed my walkup song to "Rollin'" to inspire the team.

Did it work?

No. Got walked off instead.

Interrupting my usual lurking to say that I did something today I've never done before - speaking with my local representative.

Unfortunately, many politicians don't take the time to speak with their constituents about... well, anything at all. Even less of them take the time to *listen* more than to speak, and I'm glad to have had the opportunity for Jimmy Panetta to listen to my concerns with attention and civility. We only had roughly ten minutes to speak, which isn't much time for productive discussion, but he got to understand what my largest issues are and what I expect for him to carry back with him to Washington.

I don't mean for this post to largely be an endorsement for the man, only that I respect that he is taking this time to meet with the people he represents, which to me is the absolute most important job any elected official should have. I also believe that it's extremely important for *all* of us to seek these opportunities out and speak with our own representatives regardless of political alignment. Like it or not, they have the largest impact on our daily lives and future, and they *have* to know how we feel about where we are in our lives.

So thank you @repjimmypanetta for our pleasant, albeit brief, discussion. I hope we have another opportunity in the future.

As an aside... no offense, but I like my business card better. by @nachomanlance

This is probably the first time I've used the Magic Eraser tool on my phone camera where it actually worked pretty damn well, lol

Haven't thrown on a jersey for the team yet, but going to watch and support and learn from the dugout has been a great experience so far. Has doing coed softball in the meantime transitioned well? Hahahaha... ha ha.... ha.... well, my throwing has improved anyway.

Next home game is June 15th! Show up with umbrellas and sunscreen, because.... whew, goddamn. taken in Raynor Park, Sunnyvale by @nachomanlance

Scrimmage game done!

Met up with remnants of three other teams for a practice game, mostly for the benefit of us newcomers. Couldn't ask for better weather for baseball, and for Dublin that's a plus.

It's a different beast, man. I've been a baseball fan all my life, but I haven't been a baseball player at this point since before most of my coworkers were born. I've rediscovered that I don't have the intelligence for middle-infield, but stick me in any corners of any part of the field, and I'm happy. My batting was so-so. I've found that I'm a patient batter, but still drew one strikeout, a ground out, and a fly out. My last AB I managed to get myself walked, and that's not easy when it takes *7 called balls* for a walk. Stole second after that, too! My game is rusty but not terrible, and I can live with that for now.

I mean, at least it's not as bad as my photography🙃

First official game is next week in SF, Golden Gate Park. Your man will be in uniform by then, too. taken in Emerald Glen Park by @nachomanlance
