Operation Green Light for Veterans, which began as a New York State Association of Counties initiative in 2021 and expanded nationally through NACo in 2022, is a visible sign of our commitment to supporting veterans.

But it doesn't end there. The green lights start the conversation. Raising awareness of the programs and services available to veterans on the county level sustains it. Join the movement this Nov. 4-11 to ensure our nation's veterans can both see and feel our gratitude for their selflessness and courage.

Counties are at the heart of energy siting and development, helping to power the infrastructure that keeps the lights on for residents and businesses. With electricity needs rising nationwide, county governments are finding innovative solutions to meet energy demands and support economic growth.

That's why county leaders met in the Texas Panhandle last week for the 2026 NACo Energy Symposium. In three action-packed days, attendees toured solar and wind energy sites, participated in workshops on energy storage and fiscal planning, and engaged with peers and industry experts on the best ways to manage grid modernization, balance natural resource conservation with production needs and maintain public trust.

After a disaster, counties help rebuild roads, utilities and public facilities. But when they seek federal reimbursement, it can be difficult to see where those requests stand. County leaders on NACo’s Intergovernmental Disaster Reform Task Force pushed to change that.

A new law requires FEMA to create a public dashboard showing the status of disaster reimbursement requests — a step toward giving counties the information they need as they rebuild.

This #NationalPreparednessMonth, thank you to the county leaders who brought their firsthand experience to federal decision-makers.
